Default Why y7 over y8?

So I've been thinking of putting a y7 head on my d16y8, people say it has more compression but I also want to turbo the car and was thinking that turbo and high compression don't mix well with a stock block. Advice?

If you swap to a y7 head then you have to do everything to "disconnect" vtec which i cant really think of any reason to downgrade. The only advantage of switching to non vtec would be easier tuning when you're boosted. In my opinion save your money and invest in good turbo and tuning equipment

According to the Zealworks calculator, the Y8 head (32.8cc) has a smaller combustion chamber than the Y7 head (34.6cc)... meaning regardless of what block you bolt it to, the Y8 head will make more compression and the Y7 head will make less.

y7 cam in the y8 head for turbo win times.

You need to use:

- y8 head casting (you can use valve and springs you want but remember y8 intake side springs are stiffer, two set of them make a nice upgrade)

- 5 y8 cam holders (it's bored with the head you have to use it to get right cam clearance and the dizzy side one have oil pass in it that y7 can't block we also need to use it, well every y8 holders.)

- If I make no mistakes y7 holders bolts too. (try it I think they are the same)

- both y7 rocker shaft in the right position (you'll see oil passage must be in y7 rocker arm center.)

- y7 rocker arms/rocker springs/spacers

- vtec selenoid hooked on the head, but electric unplugged.

It's a kind of test, I saw several pros trying this:

- y8 casting has square chambers, prevent detonation and plsu it gives a small amount of compression.
- also have better intake portsdesign which flow much better, I think y7 are the worst head casting to make power ever.

- y7 valvetrain are in aluminum, they are much lighter than vtec ones made of steel. You save around 20% of the total valvetrain weight if you count 16 y7 rocker arms vs 16 y8 (weighted without vtec locker arms). Less stress on valve and springs, and you don't need much stiffer springs to prevent floating.
- Using non vtec setup sounds easier to tune, no vtec to wire even it's not a big deal to do, I'm fine with non vtec.
- Maybe it will sound dumb for some, but vtec system take a small flow and pressure from the oiling system. This little bit saved goes to somewhere else more needy. We all know that Y series have oiling issues, even oil pump ported and shimmed, why not put the chances in our side, mostly when you have a turbo to feed ?

I think the y7 sounds better than the y8

Honestly imo if you're going to boost it the y7 would be a better choice but i was just saying since you already have a y8 you might be better off staying with that unless money is no issue.

gigantic waste of time.

Leave the y8 stock and put the turbo on.

Not sure why someone would want the headache of the swap to basically lose power.

If money is no object... you toss the "single jingle" in the scrap bin and install a DOHC VTEC engine... "B" series or "K" series... both are WAAAAYY better choices.
