Default Reverse to brake?

I came up with a thought today while i was driving in the rain (gotta love Miami). Lets say you're driving an non-abs car going pretty fast, and the car in front of u suddenly screeches to a halt. what would happen if u slammed on the brakes, lost traction, then switched to reverse and slammed on the accelerator. would it help out at all? would the car stall (i have an automatic)? would u lose control and swerve off?

Maybe this is a regular thing u racers do that i don't know about it. i'm sure either way it had to be done by someone at least once.

so if anyone knows what happens or just has any theories, let me know.

You would destroy the transmission.

ok.... i wasn't sure if that would happen. i thought maybe because the wheels weren't gripping the road, the transmission wouldn't have that much strain on it. considering the wheels have already stopped rotating cuz u slammed on the brakes......

Your tires have only so much traction available to turn, accelerate and decelerate. When you lock up your tires under hard braking, you've substantially their potential traction. IF you are able to switch to reverse gear when your wheels are locked up and skidding, and then floor the throttle, you'd be asking EVEN MORE from your tires when they've already exceeded maximum traction. Short answer: you rear-end the car in front of you.

i guess u guys have answered my question. i'd still like to try it out one day on an old car though.... in a secluded parking lot or a wide track. i just thought about it b/c sometimes my tires loose traction if the road is wet and i brake a lil hard (pumping, not locking). i've skid into the middle of intersections b4 at red lights. for some reason it always rains right after i put tire shine foam on my tires.....

At least for a manual transmission:

"It would be impossible to throw the transmission into reverse while the car is moving forward -- the dog teeth would never engage. They will make a lot of noise, however!"

From howstuffworks.com

I'm pretty sure all automatic transmissions would somehow lock you out of reverse while you're moving forward.

exactly. my friend did something similar and broke his final gear. he had auto and abs too.
situation was alittle different. anyways since you have abs the wheels will never lock.
thats what abs do, keep the wheels from locking. so your tires will still be turning when
you jam the tranny into reverse, then which it will make ugly noises and leave you stranded.
not to mention the bill you're gonna be paying to fix the tranny. dont even try doing
what you've described, not worth anything. if someone slams the brake on a rainy day
do the same.

i don't have ABS. luckily i have pretty good instincts and if i feel the brakes locking at all i start pumping the brakes. but it still skids quite a bit. i thought falken ziex tires were decent, was i misinformed?

anyway, this whole thing was just a thought, i would never do this to my tranny. i treat it bad enough with my hard acceleration.

A girl I knew in high school used to do what she called "reverse firsties" with her mom's station wagon - usually with a pile of other people in the car. She would roll back ward down the hill near their house with the car in neutral and the throttle mashed on the floor, then jam the lever into "D." Quite a smokeshow for a Granada, albeit only from one tire...

It says right on the bottle that you're not supposed to put it on the tread...

no duh, it's foam, it's starts to run down and leaves a puddle on the floor and gets on the tread.

and about the braking, its mostly cases where i don't have that much time to brake, and my car just starts sliding, it doesn't seem normal to me, my friends are always commenting that my tires have bad grip.

I have a set for all seasons. They are OK on the road in rain and snow (drove through 8" on a driveway), dry isn't bad. For performance aka autocross they suck! The sidewalls are made of a substance that rivals Jello.

Although I am comparing the performance driving to an Azenis which is hard to beat for a street tire so I may be unfairly biased.

Overall for sane driving on the street the Ziex 512 is OK. Autocross it sucks.
