Default Engine temp

Anyone ever have a problem with coolant temp gauge while doing a track event?
I have posted this in tech with not much success, so I will try here.
During lapping events my coolant gauge goes through the roof, but I don't believe it is correct.
Now the car is heating up just accelerating hard on the highway, I back off, the temp stays up, get back on power lightly, the gauge drops instantly back to half.
weird if you ask me. I can't figure any reason why it is doing this, make the sensor is crapped out? I bought an aftermarket temp gauge, but i am wondering if it will transfer a sensor error and do the same thing.
Any ideas? The car is a 92 Civic Si.
Thanks in advance!

That could be something as simple as a bad ground for the aftermarket gauge. The sensor or sending unit could be bad, the wiring might not be making a strong connection, something could be shorting, etc.

I would start by checking the wiring, and especially the ground wire. If everything is good, try changing the sending unit, then replace the sensor.
