Good, Bad and Ugly
OK I am new here - this would be my fifth post. First time working on Honda engine. All my experience has been with diesels of all sizes and applications.
Working on my wife's 2005 Honda CRV with the K24A1 engine which is now used as a standby vehicle. It has some issues after running 260K miles - high oil consumption, P0341, Evap, etc Detail thread here
Now Good Bad and Ugly concerning using aftermarket parts...
I am looking for feed back from members who rebuilt their stock daily drive cars and brand parts they had good luck with.
I have nothing against OEM parts but if there is equal replacement part; it would be good to know.
With aftermarket parts, I try to buy parts from OEM suppliers.
- For head gaskets, I would use OEM or FelPro
- For piston rings, I have hear good thing about Hastening and NPR. (Still need to purchase a set)
- For casted pistons, I see a lot of Asian suppliers but not sure who to trust. (Still need to purchase a set)
- For crank bearings, I see ACL recommended.
- For timing chain/tensioner, did not see anyone recommend so went with Honda OEM.
- Need to replace the exhaust camshaft but do not want to spend $450 for a new one (#14120-PPA-010) - wreck yards only selling cylinder head assemblies.
I would guess the US companies would be repackaging parts from Asian OEM suppliers.
Example: Working on my Dodge PU rear wheel bearings (Timken), discovered that that Napa bearings $60 supplied by SKF $45 who purchase directly Timken $25.
Thanks everyone,
Bob G.

For the exhaust cam you might try craigslist, OfferUp or Facebook market place. Allot of people use the stock k24 bottom ends with type s heads so someone is bound to have stock crv cams that are worth next to nothing to them. As far as pistons ycp and nippon are both good quality. For a stock rebuild one of those should work just fine if you can find the stock pistons from them.
These motors are a dime a dozen where i am. So probably not worth rebuilding from cost standpoint unless you are the type who wants a project or to save it. Go oem bearings since they offer more ranges compared to aftermarket which will likely only have std, and maybe 2 oversized options. Head gasket oem. It is very hard to beat oem quality. Fsm tells you everything

Does YCP make stock 0.020” OS pistons for K24A1 engines? If so, where do buy them from?
I am new to Honda land.

I look at any component coming out of the yard as a ‘core’. Just because they hooked up a battery, started it and had good oil pressure does not mean the engine is without issues.
Guess these JDM engine I see on eBay May not be a bad way to go... over here in the good old USA we tender to run things til they have no value.
Notice on eBay how people try to sell things like used timing chains and belts. Gee no way.
By by the way, have post some photos in the CRV forum.

Well - Just bought a set of EngineTech 0.50mm OS pistons and rings from RA. According to NPR of America, they distribute to EngineTech.
- Piston Set# P4833(4) 02-06 Dish top. 1.165" CH. Hyper. Coated skirt
- Piston Ring# S87124 02-06 Premium. Steel top. 1.2 / 1.2 / 2.0mm.
Will see what the quality is. Will upload photos when they come in this week.
