Default Unsolved Mysteries: '94 GS-R in '94 Civic

I'll try to keep this short and sweet, but I can already tell that'll it'll be difficult to do

Ok, about a year ago I swapped in a '94 GS-R into my '94 Civic DX. I built the motor with low comp. forged pistons, forged rods, ARP headstuds, Exedy clutch/Fidanza flywheel, I/H/E, and a "chipped" P28 that came with the wrecked Civic that I got everything out of (I built the motor for boost...and as far as I know, the only thing that's on the P28 is no revlimiter).

Flash forward about 8 months, I'm at the race track. I'm running my car when I notice that at about 7.5K the car stops pulling and starts making this God awful noise (almost like you pushed the clutch in and stayed WOT). I figure it's the ECU because everything about the wrecked Civic was half-assed. So I got a new chipped P28 for my set-up from Phearable.net (good people by the way). I plug in the new ECU and run my car down the road...it engages everything early (VTEC was set to engage at 5.5K..it engages at 5K, CEL shift light engages at 6.8K...set to go off at 7.8K, and the revlimiter engages at 7.2K...set to go off at 8.2K. I figure it was random, so I drove back home, shut the car off, and took it back out an hour later......everything worked perfect and the car ran like a bat out of hell.

Flash forward 3 weeks, it's back to doing the "engaging everything early" thing. I got a hold of phearable and I shipped back the ECU and got a new one.....same ****, different day with the new ECU. At this time, I'd read about ignitors/coils failing in several B18C1's, so I figured I'd give that a try...and the one I bought new when I did my swap was covered by a 1 year warranty. So I put the new one on, set the timing, and what do you know? The problem's still there. I decided it was best to just get my money back, so they obliged.

I figured it was something weird with their software, so I tried out another Honda-Tech sponsor, J-K-Tuning.com, but this time I just went with a chip...no new ECU. I got the chip in, let my car warm up, and went on my way...well, now I'm engaging everything about 700rpm's early (VTEC at 5K still, no CEL shift light whatsoever, and the revlimiter at 7.5K).

I've been told that the gauge cluster might have an issue with it, which I have a new one, just need to find time to install it and give that a try...but I'm doubtful about that one and running out of ideas.

Anybody?

(BTW, the car runs fine with the original chipped P28, just not the same "oomph" as the tuned chips)

Problem solved...all along it was something that went bad in the gauge cluster.
