Default LSVtec sounds like a scooby

Here i am scooting along the highway this afternoon and i downshift to pass a guy, of course vtec does it's thing BUT...

The instant the solenoid engaged there was a sudden loss of all power. It seemed like the engine bogged down or something and just wouldn't raise rpms at all. So I immediatly let off the gas and !POP! sounded like a backfire.

My car now has almost no power. It still runs, cranks right on up... just sounds like a nice exhaust on a Subaru. There is no kind of smoke coming out of the exhaust, I checkd the plugs and they had a little white powder/glaze on them so I'm fairly sure that the engine was running lean as a ****. I replaced them immediatley.

Could someone point me in the right direction? How does one go about checking the headgasket without removing the head?

i would check the timing belt and make sure it hasn't jumped a tooth or two.

I'm about to check the timing belt here in a second. I have not checked the compression yet, but if this timing belt is squared away that will be be thing on my list.

Yes, i do have a CEL, but it's only throwing a code for the IAT sensor.
Thanks for the input everyone!

Fuel injector plug on the #1 cylinder wasn't seated all the way. So i guess it was getitng a weak/no signal and wasn't firing correctly.

I feel like such an idiot Thanks for the help guys.

ha ha. That's funny because I was going to say Scoobys sound like they are running on 3 cylinders.
Glad you figured it out though
