LS/Vtec with Civic Type R Pistons...need help?
I have a 1995 Civic Coupe and recently got an Ls-Vtec transplant with Civic Type R pistons..the shop had to retard the timing almost all the way back because the compression is to high. I installed a fuel regulator to help, but if i try and advance it from the timing's position the motor starts to ping a little. Im currently running 91 octane, but the shop says if I ran 100 octane I could set the timing to normal, however its a little to expensive to run all the time...Is there anything I can do to help with this problem?

You could always get a thicker head gasket to lower the compression a little.
Also, you could try one of those water injection kits that cools down the intake charge.

cool down your car. Get every little cooling mod you can get you wont detonate with a good cooling system. What do you have right now for cooling.

just keep it at whatever timing it won't ping at (14 deG?). Because of the higher compression you DON'T need the extra timing, it would be foolish to want it or set it higher unless you're at the track with 100+ octane.

Your compression is so high that you will not be able to race on pump gas. Even with the bigger injectors and the ECU reprogrammed you will need to retard the timing. You also might want to invest in a J&S knock sensor, I have never used one but I have heard that they are pretty good.

Water injection?
I dunno. think the 100 octane is looking like a good option for you.

Cooling system upgrades would help. Try a bigger radiator, thermostat, make sure you use some Redline Water Wetter, and try and find 93 octane. Is that all the have in Cali?? We have 93 in Florida, whats with that??
