When people say "small block" they are probably referring to a v8.
Long block usually means it's the oil pan all the way to the valve cover.
Short block usually means just the block itself with no head.

Long block you will need things like exhaust manifold, intake manifold and such.
Complete change over is entire engine, all sensors, ECU, axles and so forth.

One of the main parts missing in a long block is the transmission. It may also be missin the manifolds both intake and exhaust. People usually specify what the long comes with but not always. A shortblock is missing the entire head and tranny.
