Default Whats the difference between long block and short block engines?

Can someone explain to me the difference between a long block and short block motor? Which one is better and do they both make the same amount of power?

They are pretty much the same. You have to use a tape measure to tell the difference :D

Seriously though, a short block is typically ONLY the block, while a long block would be the block, head, and usually the tranny.

There is no difference in power between the two, it is more of a difference in the parts that will be provided with it. Both exclude a transmission, but the shortblock I feel would be for a person wanting to check and build with all new/different parts.

SHORT BLOCKS: from valve cover to oil pan, all internals, all the sensors on the block. no intake or exhaust manifold. no distributor

Complete LONG BLOCKS: a bare long block plus: complete intake manifold, throttle body, distributor, spark plug wires, alternator, powersteering pump, and exhaust manifold... sometimes the lower down pipe isnt included.

shorty = no head, just block

long = head and block

nothing to do with manifolds, tranny, sensors, or distributors, etc.... just if there is a head or not..

no power differences.. just part of the engine itself

Now, you should be carefull when buying a complete short block because different people have different definitions.

Most likely here in Honda_tech when someone sells a complete short block, it is pretty much everything under the head to the oil pan.

If you call up acura/honda and you order a brand new complete assembled b18c5 short block ($2100) it will be missing all the sensors and a few more things/...

Here;s how it would come to your door form Honda.... *this picture gives m chills*

So for $2100 you get just the block or the block and head?

shot block= reciprocating assembly ONLY(typically, unless seller includes more), as in, block, crank, mains, rods, and pistons, assembled, etc. MAY include oil pump, oil pan, and rear main seal.

long block= complete engine assembly read to bolt onto tranny and into car ready to go.

That B18C5 was 2100 for short block.
