What is the difference between a short block and long block motor?

The short block is just the motor with out the top end (head), the long block is the complete engine (long block). So the short block is from the headgasket down

yeah, longblock usually refers to everything except the transmission and accessories. Short block is the just the block, no head or accessories.

yea, in english a short block is bottom end, where you pistons and stuff are. long block is top of the engine, down to the oil pan. without transmission

Actually a long block has no accesories, dist., intake ,etc. that is a complete engine. If you price a long block at the dealer you need to transfer all your accesories.
