Has anyone put a real motor into an Insight?
I was just checking out one of these things. It seems pretty cool, not too expensive, good aerodynamics, etc.. Has anyone ever looked into putting, say, a K20A2 into one of these things?
They weigh like 1800 lbs, and I'm sure even that can be reduced.
If no one else has even looked into it. I'm seriously considering picking one of these things up and giving it a shot. It would make a pretty neat rig. Original at the very least.
Could get expensive because the lack of aftermarket parts would mean I would have to fabricate most of it myself.

I'm sure it's very possible. But I believe the Insight has an aluminum-steel core frame, so dropping a heavier/stronger motor would most likely warp or bend the frame from launching and the weight sitting on there. It can be reinforced though.
Kinda like boxing a chassis for an old-school v8
HTH.

I found that the insight motor only weighs like 130lbs. But who knows when you include all the batteries, DC/DC converters and stuff in the rear.
It's a 1.0l 3 cyl..
I hadn't thought about the chassis. It would have to get some strengthening for sure.

I was just thinking the K series would be easiest. Maybe it wouldn't be..

martini, my brother in law drives on of these, and I've had the opportunity to look at one. It appears that the mounts are totally different than any other Honda I've seen. I'm sure you could do it, but the R&D will prove to be a real issue.
That car begs for an H22 though.....

Hmm, pondered this myself before...
Is it possible to put a tiny lil' turbo on that 3 cyl.?
That would be nice because if you drove it like a sane person, you could still get the stratospheric MPG, but have the grunt when you need it. The miniscule curb weight means even a little power should make a noticeable difference.
However, the snag would come if you ever drive the **** out of it or track it. It charges under engine braking/deceleration/coast down or something like that. So if you're running it wide open, it could be an issue, I'd imagine.
Just spit-balling here...i have no intimate knowledge of turbos, engineering or the Insight. Just thought I'd drop my 2¢ in the bucket.

I donno, I looked under the hood of an insite last year, and it looks way to small for anything larger than a d-series? But I guess if somebody wants it bad enough, it could be crammed in. Just might require cutting some of the frame out and tubing the front.
