Finished H22 Swap: 2 Problems
I have a 92 Prelude Si. I just put in a H22A.
The vtec is kicking in and everything seems to work wonderfully. I still have two issues though:
1) At exactly 5,000 RPM’s there is a vibration type noise coming from what seems to be the right side in the engine compartment, it does this in every gear at the exact same RPM’s. At first, I thought it was my metal CAI vibrating against the body, but it’s not that. It sounds sort of like a valve or something that is trying to open up or something. There is no performance loss when this happens, but I would like to know what it is.
2) After the engine has been warmed up and been driven, the RPM’s rise and surge from less than 1,000 RPM’s to about 1,500 RPM’s and does this continually at idle. No check engine light.
Where does the redline start on this H22 and where does the rev limiter kick in?
The Vtec seems to kick in hard at 5,000 RPM’s, is this where it is supposed to kick in?
What do most guys do about their tachs? Do they get an external tach, or do they get an aftermarket dash? What would you do?
Also, I bought a JDM tranny, but didnt use it. This is why: EVERYONE has told me that my USDM tranny mount would fit the JDM tranny...IT DOESNT! The bolt pattern is way off. Does anyone know about this? What mount will fit a JDM H22A tranny? The one from my H23 tranny sure wont!
Thanks to anyone that can answer any of these questions!

another one.
1) that sounds weird, let a friend drive and u sit in the passenger side and try to get a better diagnosis of the sound.
2) you might have a vacumm leak, what you can do is make sure that all your connections are good with the vac lines and make sure that your coolant level is good and try bleeding the lines as a double check.
3) redline is basically 7400 and fuel cutoff is 7800. on the jdm. usdm will be 7400
4) vtec is supposed to kick in at 5000 rpm yes that is correct.
5)the stock tach is usually off by 500rpms so just keep that in mind, you will most likely be shifting at 8000.
6) try to get a H22 pass mount, although your stock mounts should all work you have a prelude and that engine is basically bolt in. weird.
anything else let me know!

I take it you mean "H22 passenger mount"? Just get a USDM H22A mount? I have gone to the dealership and the H22A and H23 tranny mount part numbers are the same, that is why I havent gotten one. On Tuesday I will get a digital pic of it and post it.
As far as the idle surging, it seems to stop doing it when I raise the idle by just pressing the gas pedal a little bit...is there a way I can raise the idle or is it all controlled by the ecu?
I have read other forums about "secondaries" that kick in...would I be hearing that? This vibration noise occurs right when the Vtec kicks in.
Thanks again!
secondaries kick in at 4200 for the P13. so it might be something else.
the mount should work, there are two sets of bolts right where the tranny mount goes im more than positive your trying to get it on the set closest to the front of the car, try the other set.
about the idle, trust me its a vac leak just find it. u can raise the idle but waht for?

I know the answer to your surging idle problem. There is a small screw(flat-head) on the top of your throttle body that controls the idle air bypass. The screw is vertical and is located just over the part where your intake tube connects. This screw can also tell if you have a vacuum leak. With your car running, turn the screw all the way in, If the car shuts off, good, that means there is no vacuum leak. If it doesn't then you have a leak and have to find where it is. If the car shut off, turn the screw out some, restart, and turn the screw out until it starts surging again. When it starts surging, turn the screw in until the surging stops. This should solve the problem.
If you have a leak, spray wd-40 all around the intake manifold and vacuum lines. When the idle smoothes out that is where your leak is.

Anyone have a pic of a H22A transmission? Believe it or not, I have looked on the net for months and cant find one. Specifically, I want one that shows the tranny mount or the tranny mount studs.
Thanks.
