budget b20 vtec buildup: advice needed!
Ok guys, my buddy has decided on the b20z w/ b16a head for his buildup...
He doesn't know a lot about this, so I'm helping him. Goal is to run mid 12's NA... But he will also auto-x and road race with this car. This will go into a '88 crx si. And he plans to gut the rear to help with weight...
He found b20z's for ~$850
He found b16a's (SIRII) for ~$1200-~$2000
He is thinking about buying one of each and sending the b20 block out to have oil squirters and vtec lines put into it...
I'm giving him my old itr cams and valve springs...
He's undecided on the tranny; either y21 or ys1... He wants lsd for sure, but is uncertain whether to convert to hydro tranny...
He's also found complete b20 vtec longblocks that have already been built with braided oil lines and everything.
What do you guys think? Is he headed in the right direction?
If it makes sense, post up a shopping list for the budget minded.
Thanks!

Tell him to ask about an automatic B16a. He should be able to get one much cheaper, and the weaker cam profiles wont make a difference anyhow (if he's gonna use ur springs, etc). That should save him a couple of bucks.

Here are the basics I think you will need:
B20z block (you say ~$850)
1st gen b16 head (you can buy the whole longblock for ~$450, sell block)
p28 ecu chipped to DOHC (~$200)
Full set of top end gaskets (~$170)
lines and fittings (~$100)
Don't know if the addition of your ITR cams will put him in the 12's but this is you basic setup.
Also with this I would not rev past 7500-7600 for these reasons:
1)B20 pistons are heavier than LS pistons but are supported by the same rods
2)Using the higher lift ITR cams there is very little room for error(valve float) because the valves will hit the pistons
3)The 1.54 rod ratio that is unsupported by a girdle like the GSR.

Does the shop that sells these have a website?

im thinking teh same way..i ganna install my b20z like next week..includes skunk 2 manifold, street clutch, ls ecu, and obd2 to obd1 jumper... i duno if i should do all motor with the non vtec head...or turbo with non vtec...or get a b16 head (b20vtec)..i hear many problems about the vtec head though.. so if u put a GSR squirter it would solve the problem...iknoe the vtec head would make the b20 a lot faster...but i dont want to hassle with the problems like leakage of oil...what should i do>>??

850 for a b20 long block is what they go for. i have a b16 longblock which i can part with for 400 plus shipping if your not in So Cal. tranny, i owuld go with an LS with the R final drive. make sure the rods are of good quality since they will have to be custom made.

Funny no one is mentioning pistons. Pistons are #1 if you're going VTEC since the B20 pistons wont have the proper clearance with a VTEC head.
