97 Hatch swap to a 95 Gsr Engine...
Hey guys, I've tried searching and only found one post regarding this, and heres the situation:
Got a 97 dx hatchback and just picked up a wrecked 95 gsr and want to swap the engine into the hatch. What exactly will I need to do to make this work and plug in. Already planned on getting the obd2>obd1 ecu conversion harness to run a chipped p28 ecu, but what about everything else???

First of all you had better check with your state's emission laws and see if installing a motor older than the chassis is legal. It would be pointless to instlal the motor only to find out it's illegal when it comes time to have it inspected.
If you are planning to install the motor as OBDI, definately go with the 94-95 P72 ECU if you are using the stock intake manifold with secondaries. If you plan on running a modified intake manifold or Skunk2 then a chipped P28 or P30 ECU would be a better choice.

In FL, no emissions laws. The engine has a skunk2 IM on it. How will this thing plug into the engine harness?

You'll need to use your stock engine harness on the motor and add the extra wires for VTEC, knock, etc. then use an OBDII to OBDI jumper harness. A 96-98 EX harness would minimize the wiring if you feel like spending the extra $.
Are you sure the engine will plug into the stock harness in the hatch? Unlike the ob1 cars, it has the one plug harness as opposed to the 2 part in obd1 cars.

As I said, you need to transfer your stock engine harness onto the GSR motor or use a 96-98 EX harness for less wiring. You will need an OBDII GSR distributor and injectors for it to be plug and play. You can also use the OBDI components but you will need to rewire those particular plugs on your harness with OBDI plugs.

BTW I believe its national law that an engine be at most as old as the chassis to be legal. Now the chances of you getting caught could be slim, but just something to remember.
It's definitely not a nationwide law because i live in WV and it's not illegal to have a motor oler than the vehicle. There is no emission testing or visual inpsection of any sort, only safety inspection once a year.
It doesnt matter to me tho, its my friends car and im helping him w/the swap, so he'll take the fall and I'll take his engine if worse come to worse.
Since you have the crashed gs-r, why use the whole wiring (engine/under dash). This way you can still use the obd1 ecu.
for it to all plug in you need obd2 gsr injectors b series alternator and distributor which has to be obd 2 because of the plugs wire up the vtec and oil press senors if your using a p28 brain and knock sensor if your using b16 or gsr or type r and you will also need a b series rear mount... also if your getting a jumper make sure you get it for 96-98 because 99-00 are different

he needs the si driver side mount and rear mount...
he can use the teg mounts for the rest
and no you cant use d-series mounts

This whole thread can be summed up real easy with about one post, why all the chopped up info?

Here's wht you need from the crashed GSR, if all these parts are still salvageable:
- complete axles
- shift linkage
- Reuse whatever throttle linkage is on the GSR motor/skunk2 IM, and not your 97 Civic's throttle linkage.
- REAR engine bracket (not the rubber, crossmember mount)
- FRONT tranny mount
- A/C mount
- reuse your 97 civic's TOP tranny mount
- the Timing belt mount may be an issue, since the GSR uses a 3-post style mount.
The fix, is by usingan Si coupe's block mounted black-cast iron mount & reusing your civic's 'bridge mount' and rubber oil-filled mount seen here:
- reuse your existing DX harness & add the respective VTEC wiring, or like VTECvillian says (and I highly suggest this too) pick up a 96-98 EX engine harness (not a 99-00 EX as it differs) and all will be plug n' play.... BUT...either way, you will still need to get a 96+ B-series distributor, injectors and alternator, since those specific parts off your wrecked GSR engine are NOT compatible with the 96+ Civic engine harness plugs. Trust me, you don't want to rewire....and if you have chance NOT to rewire, why bother right?
BTW, you cannot use your 97 SOHC distributor or alternator on a B-series engine; but you can use the injectors, thing is, they're not B-series spec so they might not suffice in certain aspects, but they will work regardless; untill you get OBD2 b-series injectors. I suggest trading someone or someplace your OBD1 B-series parts for OBD2 B-series parts..
repetative side notes:
All 92-00 integras & 92-95 civics have 2-piece harness. One at the engine bay and one that feeds from the underdash out to the engine bay, and meets up with the engine harness at the passengerside shock tower.
---
All 96-00 civics have a 1-piece engine harness that goes from the engine bay, though the firewall (behind the battery), and into the cabin down to the ecu. This is why you can't use the Integra harness in any 96-00 civic; because of the 1 & 2 piece wire harness design differences, as well as being OBD1 & OBD2.
- I wouldn't worry about emissions if you don't care about 'ref'ing' your car. when it comes time to smog, either go back to SOHC or add the respective OBD2 smog compliant components, and see if you could get away with that. But you already mentioned you don't need to worry about smog stuff anyways....so screw it.
- I concurr, on the idea of going ith an OBD2--OBD1 jumper to utilize the OBD1/GSR P72. Way good idea becaue you have a Skunk2 IM and its good idea to have the ecu reprogrammed with a single-butterfly ecu program (hit me up if you need my ecu services....or an ecu jumper.....heh, yeah yeah shameless plug!)
....and I think thats about it.

I think everyone should just stop mentioning smog to him because we dont have emissions in FL......
