Default Should I do it?

Well let me start by saying i'm 17. Wondering what im doing in a S2000 forum? Well my mom doesn't like my current car. Weird since i pay for everything on it and always have. Grafiti or whatever I've been reading past posts about you hating on young people having nice cars but don't start in this thread please. Anyways i got 1000 sitting in my bank account. And should have about 4000 total after i get rid of mine. Now s2000's can be had for about uhmm lets say 12k respectively? So what im trying to do is decide if i should put that money as a down payment and get and s2000. Maybe pay it off cash and make payments to my mom or i cna make the payments. 8000 financed over 3 years shouldn't be to bad of a payment. If anything i have 8k sitting in a cd that i got from a car accident that i can pay off the car with next year, but i rather not it come to that. Want to keep that in case of emergency's such as school or something. Now my mom shouldn't have a problem with that either. She says she'll pay my insurance i mean im grateful for that. One thing out of the way.

What i want to ask you guys is should i do it? You think its reasonable? Can i pull it off? Ill be working at ups doing 20 hours a week makign about 120 a week. 480 a month for expenses. Payment gas and food and such.

Also let me state i am no way spoiled. And if you want a detailed list of how i got that 4000 (or soon to be) on my own ill make a new thread. Its not hard if you work for it and appreciate every little thing.

I feel like i'm about to get flamed, but this is Honda-Tech so anything posted becomes flame wars.

Since you're buying an S because your mom doesn't like your current car. You shouldn't buy an S.

haha exactly what i thought. But shes going through this phase where she hates old cars. Like alot.....she made (forced) my brother to buy a 06 xb. She likes the car as a whole. Shes seen it before. Idk if she knows its a two seater yet though. But we'll see. Also my current car is kinda crapping on me. Think power steerign belt is slipping and the ride is getting so annoying. Along with the exhaust. Soooo loud! Wish i would've kept my turbo on it now.

If you are serious about it. Get her to co-sign with you. You'll still get the credit and you'll probably get a lot better of a rate. I financed 9k over 5 years and I pay 190 a month with my parents as a co-signer. Biggest words of wisdom I have are search around for one. Don't just jump on the first $12,000 one you find. And when you do find a good one go over the car with a fine tooth comb, cause I got screwed over on some things with mine. Good luck thou.

Definitely gonna take my time. When i was looking for my current car. I had no intention of buying it. Wasnt even interested in the same make. But i waited and it poped in my hands. 1300 for a greddy turbo civic. not bad aye?

Definitely gonna get co-sign if we decide to finance. I dont think its possible for me to go ti alone anyways since im only 17. Either my brother. mom or bro-in-law.

ha..this little boy is warning me? i bet your ***** haven't even dropped yet...but you think you can handle a big boy car? i wasn't going to "hate" but you called me out...and as an FYI, it's not me "hating", it's me giving you little children advice that you should hear that your boyfriends on myspace won't tell you

so now let me tell you what i think, and you can call it "hate" because i'm not going to tell you what you want to hear:

1. wow $4000....i make that in 2 weeks.....you think that's alot of money? coupled with a measly 1000 in your bank account?

2. 20 hours a week to get $120 bucks = $6 an hour (if that 120 is after tax)...that's pathetic...

3. you talk about being young and working hard, blah blah blah, but yet you need a co-signer? face it...you have no credit and cannot afford this car

3. you're 17...you really think that you can handle a car like this, rookie?

this being said, here's what i hope happens: you get the car with a co-signer, it taps your bank account and every penny that you make at your measly job, you crash the car into a tree, and the insurance lowballs you. now, i'm assuming you won't have gap insurance because it'll be a bitch to afford the car and insurance alone, so once you get lowballed you won't be able to cover what you owe on the car.

at this point your co-signer, probably mommy, well be held liable...having ths extra financial burden will make her hate you and ruin your relationship forever...not to mention your credit

this also impacts everyone other s2000 owner's insurance as more and more little inexperienced children have negative outcomes because of said inexperience and insurance has to bail them out....the more negative connotation a car has, the more it costs to insure

so please, buy the car, crash it, and go broke in the process.....graf-fiti is on your side

Insurance will be at least 300 or more a month is your mom prepared for that? Also you need to factor in maintenance, and unexpected repairs.

If you can do it safely, more power to ya. But you have to think beyond what you want now too. I.e. college, future, savings, etc.

P.s. Don't get a girlfriend if you get the S....she'll wipe your bank acct. out.

My advice is dont finance a car you cant afford. You will have to take out a long term loan, at a higher interest rate. At the end of the loan you will have paid nearly double for a car that will be worth maybe 8-9k.

Doesn't really seem like a wise investment, especially with college expenses coming up, and all the money you will be making will be going to payments, gas, etc. So your fun budget kind of goes out the window, and as stated above, your budget for unexpected repairs will be non existant.

im 17 and i OWN an s2k... insurance is A LOT, currently my rates are 130 a month for liability coverage on my s2k/ 97prelude. I asked my insurance agent how much it would be to up the s2k to full coverage, he said 100 a month w/ my current coverage. (i have beefy 100k/300k/50k coverage) so 230 a month approximately.

and before i get flamed for not getting full coverage, When I do drive it to school or wherever, I always have sight of it. (yes i park basically outside of my classrooms) But most of the time I will be in my prelude since there aren't many twisties around here anwyays.

but dude, 120 a week.. get a better job. For 20 hours of just browsing craigslist/honda-tech/hidplanet/ebay, I'm sure you could flip items enough to profit that 120.. Hell, my friend details cars for 150$ and that takes usually 5hours.

i guess....i just hate when people say you're a hater because:

1. you don't like what i did to my car
2. you don't say what i want to hear

it's like these kids only want people to hear what they want, and anyone who doesn't is an ***/hater/e-thug

i guess hater = realist

dagle i like you, and i think you are one of the few younger kids who sees what i'm saying...but i have to point something out:

just because you can see your car at school is no means a defense to not having full coverage....

what if you get hit by someone uninsured/underinsured and you weren't liable? i hate insurance as much as the next guy but all it takes is one accident when the other party is at fault, and cannot pay, and you will understand why full coverage is so vital

p.s. i am a cpa with a master's in accounting and finance working as a controller for my corporation... looking to move up to cfo is a few years... and i still vote democrat

yeah i've actually thought about that, as much as I love my s2k.. i'd just have to face the consequences of having only liability then partout/fix and lose the difference.. I will be getting full coverage soon tho and i havent taken the S outta my garage due to rain

Wowo wrote so much and feel sliek a waste cause i wasnt logged in. anyways here i go again.

grafiti- I wasnt callign you out. I jsut didnt want you to waste your tiem telling em the same thing you said in the other two threads. K first my job. Tell me whats so pathetic about it. How much did you make when you were 17? you amke 4000? Power to you. Im happy. You worked hard and went to school but till i get there you cant say anything. Our ages im sure are on the opposite of the timeline. Also one thing to add, how can you hate on a complete stranger and hope his family and himself has a hard time? Obviosuly that eduction youg to making 4000 every two weeks didnt teach you self-respect. weren't hugged much as a child huh?

I have been workign at my moms convenience store since new years. Every week day from 9-9. 12 hours a day. Helping my mom out while she goes and takes care of Our motel taht caught fire. I work i have respect.

My brother-in-law makes 4500 every two weeks, don't see him bragging. He lives life to his fullest and enjoys it. Doesnt pick fights with kids over the internet. Congrats Hope you really do, honestly have a good life.

LAS2k- ima calling our insurance company broker, which is also a family friend to get a quote 2mrw.

B18c1995- Doubt ill be financing it. Liek mentioned above probably pay it off. Its not much anyways. I could just pay off my mom.

dagle- gonna call to find out mine right now. My current car 93 civic is 450 for 6 months, for liability.

when i was 17 i made 10 bucks an hour working at autozone

yes, our ages are different, but the point is there are better things you can do with your money, the car can wait....why settle for a high mileage probably beat s2000 for cheap just to have one? as las2k said, what about maintenance, etc? i really don't hope misfortune upon your family, just highlighting an extreme outcome that could potentially arise

and please, don't tell me about self respect, oh wise one, remember you're 17

what's a hug by the way?

Autozone doesn't pay 10 an hours here.

Maintenance i can afford. Its better than a BMW which i was going to get in the beginning. Honestly i probably wont even go through with getting one. The main reason insurance. Maintenance it is a honda. And im positive its going to be better than allt ehs tuff ive done to my civic. So ti shouldnt be bad.

And self-respect part was when you talked about me and my family having a hard time. Thats just ridiculous how much you can be a dick to a complete stranger. Hope you get that promotion as cfo as mentioned above. I might look into your profession as well. Kinda undecided and since it pays as well as you say must be good. No?

Then again i rather pick a career i would be happy with. I don't wanna be one of those people who wakes up to dread work. Good night all im done for tonight. Time to pack up and go home. Get some sleep to wake up to this again 2mrw morning.

it's the internet...i know you're a complete stranger which is why what i say to you shouldnt even matter....but if it's worth anything i don't wish any negative stuff upon your family, sounds like there's enough of that as it is

by the way, i love my job and don't dread waking up in the morning....

save the money now so you can have the toys later

Your too young, seriously, not only your age but what your saying, your mommy this and asking US. IF you were a big boy you can make your own desicions and not have us tell you what to do or not to do.

1k ''sitting in my bank account'' hahaha thats funny

You've already been in an accident, now you want an S , not to mention your insurance will be at least $320 a month, and to even rely on your accident money is just ridiculous

$480 A Month my insurance alone is $290 a month(speeding tickets) , but to me its worth it I love this car

Im NOT hating but to be straight up with you, you CANT afford it and you will be scrapping every penny you got to live month to month just to pay for the car not to mention GAS/CLOTHS/GOING OUT MONEY ETC.

Maybe later on down the road buddy, take care
