I've taken them off both ways. I really don't see a reason not to get a spring compressor. You should be able to rent them at your local auto parts store...

i didn't use one either with my first project but after getting more money....40 bucks for spring compressor is a good investment. I've used it over 8 times already. 4 yrs ago a guy working at a shop died in minnesota...spring shot out and went in his neck...
if your putting a TRUE coilover setup in, you DONT need a compressor, since you dont need to compress teh springs to take them out.
if your putting RACE springs in (H&R race, neuspeed race, etc) you DONT need to use a compressor to put them in, since the springs are short enough to fit on the shocks. (you'll prolly want the compressor to take the old springs off tho)
but since it sounds like your taking the stock springs out, a compressor will come in handy
just put a deposit on one @ autozone, and get the $$ back when you return it

I agree with this guy... I bought a spring compressor for my lowering job. Removing the stock springs, from the stock shocks (to rob the other parts) I found the stock springs were under load, so a spring compressor might prevent an unlikely (but ever present) chance of injury - however fitting my eibach sportlines to my kyb agx, I found the springs were short enough to get it mounted without the spring compressor.
