B21A1 with shot rings
well im thinkin about pickin up a 1991 prelude for free as a daily driver with a B21A1 that burns oil like mad. The piston rings are shot. Is it a simple matter of putting in new rings to fix it? Is this easy or hard? The lude supposedly had over 200k miles, but the odometer stopped working at 140k lol

I bet the rings have needed to be replaced for some time, so the cylinder walls are probably scored. I say this because of how you described its oil consumption. A rebuild is probably needed with oversized pistons and rings. But if you don't really care too much just put new rings in it, compression will still be lower than normal, resulting in a decrease in horsepower (if the walls are even scored) but it will run fine. Open it up and see for yourself.

yeah i was thinkin that, but the walls are made of some composite material that's so strong it tears the rings apart, supposedly impossible to bore

Yeah it's that stuff they used in nsx engines. FPR or something like that. Guess it's not good for high mileage. b21's usually have oil consumption issues.

nope, the b20 has iron, the b21 has frm, it was the test engine for it. they fixed the design on h22 thats why the b21 go out after awhile

ah no kidding, learn something new every day. i guess that frm issue on the b21 was why the Honda salvage yard i worked for a few yeas at threw every single b21a1 into the scrap pile and coveted the b20's.
