Default VIOLENT SHAKING

Everynow and then when im idling(On D) my RPM needle will jump from 750 rpms all

the way down to 400 rpms. It does this repeatedly and at the same time the car will

shake violently. IT does this for a few seconds then stop and goes back to the normal

idle rpm @ 750. THe car never died or anything and it still runs really well when i give it

gas. This started last two sundays ago, happened around 5 times total. 2 today, i just

hope this doesnt progess.

88 civic lx auto, has 129k on the clock.

I have the same problem with my 89 dx crx. It will idle and drop rpms. but mine does not shake, so thats the only diff. People told me to check my iacv. i think im going to change the spark plugs, spark plug wires, only because the person who owned the car before me put huge not needed wires. maybe check the fuel filter and distributer cap. maybe check those things. hopefully that will help.

Any CELs? You need to adjust it in accordance with the procedure in your repair manual. If you don't have one, get one. Otherwise:

1.) Warm car to op. temp and unplug EACV
2.) Note idle speed, should be ~650RPM, if not adjust w/ idle screw.
3.) Plug EACV back in, should make a sucking noise
4.) Shut car off, reset ECU
5.) Repeat checks with high beams, defroster and heater on HI
6.) Adjust if neccessary

There is also an electrical test in your manual that you should follow.

If this fails to fix it, either: 1) Your EACV is dirty (clean it!), 2) Your EACV is faulty (replace it!), 3) You have a vaccuum leak somewhere, or 4) you have air in your coolant system.

where is the IACV located? My idle is always above 750........
should it be idling at 650 in P or D?

Oh, I must not have seen that you had an auto. The procedure is probably a little different, I don't have my manual on hand at the moment, but I believe it would be with the car in park. The IAC/EACV is located on the back of your intake mani., you'll see a wiring connector going to it as well as two small coolant hoses.

Low idle can be caused by air in the coolant?

Lol, that could be my problem...

Not neccessarily low idle per se, but erratic idle. Worth checking out, it's easy and doesn't take long.
