You usually just remove the valve cover. Go on to autozone and sign up and go into the repair section you can use there repair manuals for alot of work.

A valve cover gasket is pretty self explanatory. All the bolts are right in front of you. Just go to autozone and pick up a valve cover gasket kit with new grommets and you should be good to go.

Yeah, hand tight is all you need. I think the spec is something like 20ft-lbs, too low for most torque wrenches. If you don't have a smaller (lower reading) torque wrench, grab a ratchet, grab it by the center of the big end (not the handle) and tighten the valve cover bolts that way.
