Buying a used engine... What to look for?
I found a used B16 for sale in a car that had front end damage. As far as I know the engine should be in fine working condition, and I should be able to see it start up and run on arrival. What I would like to know is if there is anything specific I should look for in the car, whether it be in the oil, or coolant, how to check a vtec solenoid, and all matter of other things that you guys might think is useful and relavant to me making sure I don't buy a junk engine. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

pull the oil dipstick out and light a lighter into the oil on the dipstick. if the oil crackles and pops the motor may have possible over heating issues.

basics;
-check the oil make sure its not burning oil.
-let it run for a while and look at the pipes if its spitting out too much smoke or weird color, it could be burning oil.
-take out a plug and look at it make sure it looks as it should and there is no fouling.
-take off the oil cap and look at the inside of the motor, it should be clean not too much black gunk buildup.
-the comp. test is a good idea too (props to who said that)
post back on how it goes and good luck.

also, if its still in the body lift up the hood and look for any water and oil stains/spots on the underside of the hood usually an indication of overheating or a previously blown motor.

Re: Buying a used engine... What to look for?
Every oil change on my supermoto bike I do a test similar to this. I would take an old pan on a hot plate and get it hot, then dump some oil onto it and watch for popping. Once this started to happen, I knew the case sealant was bad and needed a reseal. Cases were split yesterday under warranty and sure enough I had the old style sealant and it crumbled allowing coolant to slip through ever so slightly.
Bottom line, it works. If it is out of a car, I take a breaker bar and make sure it turns over smooth, and also check each spark plug to see that they arent stripped or seized in place.

Re: Buying a used engine... What to look for?
another way to check if it has had overheating problems is just to smell the coolant...if it smells like gas or fumey, you might want to do a block test. also look for rust/coolant residue anywhere on the engine. same goes for oil leaks. like others have said already look at your oil cap if it looks "foamy or frothy" could have pcv problems...that wouldnt keep it from running but good to check. oh an heres one i learned the hard way. if you can, before you purchase it take off the valve cover or get a flashlight an look through the oil cap, an look a the rocker assembly, if it looks like it has alot of "waxy" oil build up sticking to the springs rocker arms or casting, you might want to stay away from that engine, theres no way to really clean all that off unless you pull the head off an steam clean, but all that can clog up oil passages an lead to loss of oil pressure. this is caused by driving short trips alot an not letting your engine fully warm up.

if u can start up the engine. let it run for about 10, 15 mins wit the motor running take the oil cap off if the oil on the cap looks watery,white or foamy the head gasket is blown. or there is water leakin into the engine

Just buy it from a good place like hmotorsonline.com or someone that can start the motor for you as well as show you signs that the motor was well kept or if rebuilt has proof of parts inside.
