Axle clicking when turning, what could happen?
I tore a cv boot and haven't repaired it yet. Probably most of the greese came out and now it's clicking when I turn. I had this prob before on my CRX and I know I should change it out, but I drove my CRX for 4+ years and hard on that while it was clicking. I don't really know what the cv joint does, but I guess it allows you to turn while accelerating? What is the worst that can happen?

Worst thing that can happen is all the grease comes out and then the joint dries up and soon after the axle breaks then your car won't run, hope you have towing on your insurance...

if the axle siezes you could destroy more than the axle.
think about it, right wheel suddenly LOCKS UP car goes right, hits somthing. car goes bye bye.
its 65$ to replace an axle, do it.

Guess I'm going to replace it. Yeah, for what it cost to fix, I can't afford not to, but I am dreading that the axle will be stuck in the hub (my crx axle was stuck), any tool to get it out?

a hammer?
ive never mushroomed the head of an axle using a mallet and a block of wood, and once its too low to hit with the wood a large socket and hammer to move it the rest of the way out.

How many splines for an 89 civic si again? 23 or 26? I forgot which ones. In the process of getting some axles to replace my bad one.

While you are replacing one you might as well do the other one. It's not hard, if you have an impact gun it makes the job a hell of a lot easier. I just did both of mine and helped (somewhat overslept and showed up late) my friend do his. If you go to Autozone to get them then you can replace the axles anywhere. Warrenties are for every store.

But why would I want to do the other one? I would still have to do the same thing on the other side, but my axle is still good on the other side anyway. It's not like it's going to save me any more time, but maybe the piece of mind helps?
Why replace something like that if it isn't showing any signs? It's not like it's a timing belt or something that requires timed maintenance.
Anyone know how many teeth on the spline for an 89 civic? I might have to start a new post.

I don't know that I would replace both of them. If the other shows no signs (clicking) of wear let it ride. Always remember to check the boots for cracks when you change your oil. Check the other post for the spline count.
