I just purchased a 2012 CR-V EXL, super condition but not worth the $18,000 We paid for it, but that is another story... I noticed an antenna on the windshield and found it had remote start but We did not receive a remote start fob when we purchased it. We do not mind buying a remote to even the entire module/kit but it says we have to have a dealer set it up. I do a lot of car repairs from changing transmissions to upgrading firmware, why do we have to pay for a dealer to do what ever they say they have to do to get the remote start to work?

 

The system need to be registered via HDS (Honda Diagnostic System), by using the PCM code (Iimobilizer Code) which is obtained via their system.

So I verified that the car does have the remote start module and it is in tack. I need a transmitter now, the original owners did not turn it in. When I acquire one, will I have to program it or sync it somehow? I downloaded the install and user manual and do not see a process.

Yes, a new transmitter needs to be programmed to the ID code of the main unit (it is referred to in the user manual).

Honda HDS's menu for the engine starter has a "Register New Transmitter" selection (see the image in step # 8; page 24 of 27) on the installation instructions. This step is usually for adding a second transmitter. The remote engine starter system can accommodate up to a total of two transmitter. It may be possible to delete the old transmitter.
