98 AWD, Engine Trans Removal

98 AWD, Engine Trans Removal
Well, due to a moment of a complete lack of judgment, our CR-V is going to need a transmission. Or atleast I am almost certain it will. I am most likely going to remove it myself and take it to a local shop for overhaul. I am not really concerned about pulling the tranny, no big. I am wondering about the possibility of pulling the engine and transmission together though. I would like it most if they could come out the top, but dropping them out the bottom could be done also. It is due for a timing belt, the front seal is pouring, needs a tune up, etc. I figure it would be just as easy to do all that with the engine out, since the trans will be coming out also. So, anyone have any experience pulling both the engine and trans? There really isn't a "subframe" per se to drop, so that isn't in the way. Just curious about y'alls thoughts

Re: 98 AWD, Engine Trans Removal
I dropped it when I did a engine swap. dropped it onto a thick piece of cardboard and slid it out. This was before I bought a shop crane so we made do with a comealong.
You'll have to jack the car up very high to get it out from under there and slide it via the passenger wheel well. Also the intake manifold is really tall and will most likely have to come off before.
If you have a shop crane i'd pull it out of the top and just use a load leveler.

DO IT ON ALL FOURS
Re: 98 AWD, Engine Trans Removal
Tried it out through the top once. Such a major PITA it is not even remotely worth it. Go out the bottom for sure. The AWD part of the trans is the main issue as well as having to remove just about everything in the bay to get it out.
Pull off the intake manifold and you can just barely slide it out with normal height 2 ton jacks put under the front crossmember. Jack the car up with a 4x4 on top of the jack to get enough height. A lift is the easiest solution but you can still easily do it without one, but be prepared to lift it higher than you would think.

I think I have decided to just let a local import shop replace the trans. I haven't decided for sure, but I am leaning that way. $500 is a lot of money, but I just flat don't have time anymore for big projects like that.
