I don't know of any logical way to just pull the engine alone.....In short, they both must come out.

Pulling just the engine, is going to be a major PITA removing and installing.

Removing the trans is very simple.

Remove it in 1 assembly, and do the work out side of the car.

I purchased a Civic for cheap and had to tackled the same task that your about to do. Before going forth with the swap, I went and purchased an engine hoist.

Now when it came down to removing the engine, meaning after i disconnect and removed everything attached from the engine/trans to the chassis, I simply raised the front end of my civic and dropped my engine by resting it on a dolly...

If you are going to go this route please research and read on how to get this done properly.

To be honest, In one month I took the engine in and out like this about 7 times and I must say, on the 7th time I did this, it took me 45 mins to complete. So its not that hard of a task
