ZEX 59300 into my d16y8? (Need some confirmation)
Yes, I've searched and read through all the ZEX posts ... did it for the past hour or two. I just need some confirmation.
When running a d16z6 cam in my d16y8, will the only thing that needs adjusting be the cam timing? In one of the archived posts, someone said the cam timing will need to be adjusted via a cam gear. In another, someone said the cam timing can be adjusted but the ignition timing will be off and that it won't work out in the end. Which is it?
I plan on getting a Skunk2 cam gear for the dyno tune. Thx.

It should come with the adjustment specs.
Sorry I don't know for sure, but you can run stock cam gear.
BTW, Zem cam in a y8

He is looking for performance. Zex can uses larger lobes (from what I understand) which produce much more horse power than stock. I wish I could find the dyno...

You don't think I've tried that already? I can't find anyone who sells the ZEX y8 cam. ZEX has it on their website, but it doesn't even say which cam you're getting if you try and place an order, and they supposedly have two--the 105100 and 105300. I tried calling them like twice today, and no one picked up. (Yes, I accounted for different time zones. )
Soooo. . . . I went back through the archives and found a post from Moose who says the cam timing will need adjustment due to putting a cam meant for a z6 in a y8. But that one other guy's post about the ignition timing being off still bothers me, and he even says he talked to Comp Cams about it. (They make ZEX cams.)
Anyone else have insight? Anyone at all?

i've read of many people doing it. you need a cam gear, b/c puttin the zex cam from the z6 into the y8 will make your timing be off by +1 or -1 degrees, or more? i don't remember. try looking on dseries.org they have alot of posts on this.

Re: ZEX 59300 into my d16y8? (Rhythm Racer)
Well, I'm fairly positive a cam for a Z6 will fit into a Y8. The only thing I'm uncertain of is what will need changing. . . .
the cam timing?
ignition timing?
both?
or neither because a few here said it simply won't work?
I've been reading through the archives and **** for like the past 3 hours, trying to find a definitive answer.

Here's one of the posts I'm talking about: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=528066
Is what Moose says correct? That only a cam gear will be needed? I plan on getting one, anyway. Or is what another guy said in a different post correct (forget his name) in that the ignition timing will be affect too greatly to be corrected?

My friend has a Zex Z6 cam in his Y8 head, and we heard from somewhere that the Z6 and Y8 cams are something like 20 degrees off from each other or something like that. His distributor is fully advanced and the timing on the crank is still slightly retarded.

Holy ****. Yeah, that's what another H-T mentioned in an archived post. But everyone else has been saying it will work, just a cam gear would be needed. Too many conflicting results and answers!

Daniel, apon futher investigations I've found that the the y6 and y8 cams are very different. I'm very sorry, I don't have the correct answer, so a bump for you, good luck, I am curious myself!

So Daniel, did you ever get the Zex59300 to work in your y8?Because I'm about 3 seconds away from buying one on the internet, but just want to double check.

The difference is 5 Degrees.... From everything I've read that's 2 1/2 marks on a cam gear adj. Or half a tooth difference. Do some searchs there are several post on this setup. You can use it but you need to retard it I believe a little bit.

Well, I actually ended up buying the Skunk2 S1 cam, which has similar specs to the 59300 (almost). It was also designed for the Z6 but worked perfectly fine in my Y8. I did have to advance the cam timing about 5 degrees with a Skunk2 cam gear, but other than that it worked. While getting dyno tuned with a VAFC to get the cam gear dialed in, I found out some unexpected things that resulted from me being turbocharged before (low compression ). So I sold the cam/cam gear to axhandler, who has good results with it. He made a post about it.

Yes I believe that if you are putting any z6 cam into a y8 head you will need to advance cam timing around 4-5 degrees and adjust ignition timing accordingly. I'm planning on runnin the zex cam on my y8 soon. A while back I even tried calling up zex and asking if they actually had a y8 stage 2 cam and they said that they hadn't even gotten the cores in to do it yet and that he had no idea how long it would be.
