Default WTF? Car is RATTLING like mad...

So I've just about had enough of this ****. It seems like every day there's some new bullshit I have to deal with on my car... Here's what's going on: When I rev to about 4500-5000 and let off the gas, there is a crazy loud rattling sound that comes from right around where the cat and b pipes meet.

I took it into have it looked at for free at Midas, because I could'nt see anything wrong with it myself. Neither could they... I don't think there's anything broken inside my cat, but that is a possibility. Anothr thing that was mentioned is that there might be a rock or soemthing stuck inside my heat shield (unlikely.)

Has anyone else experienced anything like this before? I started noticing the problem only after I installed my header, but I'm 99% sure it's not a loose bolt or something. I also don't see any evidence of the exhaust rubbing on the undercarrige of the car.

Any help/suggestions/advice/flames are welcome, I'm ******* frustrated with this car right now...

Nate

when im driving @ like 2500 rpm in 4th gear and give it gas, i can hear/feel my muffler rattling. i think its cause to much exhaust is going out it or something like that. or maybe its not fitted correctly?

maybe this is your case to.

Maybe you should recalculate the odds so they reflect reality instead of pride. You probably knocked something broken loose inside the cat or you have a raging boner of an exhaust leak because you put a gasket on backwards or you have loose bolts or your heatshields are rattling (Midas sucks...just check it yourself). As far as rocks being stuck somewhere, I used to laugh about that until the screaching of 1000 deaths snuck up on me on my way to work one day and I had to stop and dig a boulder out of my brake dust shield/rotor area to keep my face from exploding.

I dunno, the sound I hear is comming from around the exhaust collector/cat, not the muuffler.

It may actually be the honey comb inside the cat coming apart.

Get underneath your car and tap on your cat with a rubber mallet and see if you can tell if it seem's like theres stuff loose in there.

I had the same problem then threw on a 99 civic ex cat and it fixed it.

The reason I'm 99% sure it's not a bolt is because I check all of them, dude. The only real reason I can't get down there and look at everything really xclosely is because I have no jack/tools/garage etc... I'm at school now, all my **** is back home.

hell yeah..

That's why i do NOT have an aftermarket cat.

Tom (b18c5-eh2) made a post about catco cats and they seem like total garbage.

But don't get me wrong ALL **** goes bad / can go bad, because my OEM one did after it being 12+ year's old.

OK guys, I fixed my rattle noise that EVERYONE seems to talk about. I had this rattle noise on my '94 GSR and I fixed it in my '95 GSR. So here it is.

On another thread I read that the rattling comes from the A pipe aka downpipe from the exhaust manifold (headers). I pulled everything off and inspected the downpipe and if you look at the entire stock headers it's really big in diameter but when you look inside the tubes it's not so big. Basically there's a pipe inside the cast iron molding (pipe within a pipe) and what happens is, it breaks off from the outter cast iron piece. Then when you rev to 3,000rpm it will rattle.

I put in some DC 4-2-1 headers and it fixed the problem instantaneously. Of course on other cars there may be other sources for the problem such as heatshield. Just check everything, but the really loud annoying one is usually the stock headers.

When you hit the throttle hard and let go, all kinds of gas goes into your exhaust for a brief instant. If your exhaust is hot enough, it ignites the gas and you get a pinging detonation like sound inside your downpipe. I had this problem before I completely tuned my AEM EMS and all it's features. It was something like "decel fuel cut' and it's also built into the stock ECU program, but if your car has been modified and not tuned, you experience problems like this.

Or it's the notorious honda cat converter heat shield. Or maybe it's what he said. WTF.

Jeebus. I think I really need someone to just hear it and then try to help me out. There are 1000000001 things it could be...

I got mine checked out because it was doing something similar, but it turned out to be a heat shield that was rattling. It scared me because when I first pulled into the shop, they thought it might have been my tranny.

I had the rattle. It was the gasket between the downpipe and the mid/b-pipe. I had a muffler shop replace it for like $27 including labor and the rattle went away. You can do it yourself too.

Unfortunately... No updates. It still rattles like whoa. I had my buddy cole ride in it, and we think it is more than likely a loose bolt, or some other metal-on-metal rubbing, as oppsed to a busted cat. I just have to find time to jack it up and check everything.

mine rattles too.. i have an APEX'i N1 catback. At first I thought it was the b-pipe, but it turns out it's the hanger that's hitting the bumper reinforcement bar support (sub-frame).. kinda hard to explain..

I still have to get a dremel and clean it up .. now i just use some folded papertowels and stick it between the support and the hanger.

I have yet to find my rattling too, there is so much that it could be, but i'm sure my rattling is where the cat and the headers meet. I don't know exactly where it's at, but i seems to be on the inside. This **** is also driving me CRAZY!

Take it to a muffler shop. I'm almost certain that it's either a bad gasket or there is not gasket between the cat and the b-pipe or between the downpipe and the cat.
