Icon2 why is my stock 96 dx hatch getting horrible mpg??

I have a 96 dx hatch with a stock but not original y7. I am getting around 20-25 mpg and thats without using ac. I should be getting at least 30-40 mpg right? I don't have a check engine light but I do get some weird studder around 2400 rpm. Is it possible that this might be the reason why I'm getting horrible mpg or could it be something else? Engine idles and drives fine other than the studder, so what do you guys think? Any and all help will be appreaciated

how's the timing adjusted?
try leaning it out by adjusting the dizzy and doing a tune up....

fuel filter would help too, oil change.. just routine maint..

When was your last full tune-up? What exactly did it entail? When did you last calibrate your TPS?

Also, seriously, thank you for your full and proper original post. It's seriously nice to see, compared to most of the other horrible threads people have been starting over the past couple days.

I've never messed with the timing so I dont know. I will do a tune up tomorrow (wires, plugs, oil change, and maybe a cap) I changed the fuel filter with a new Honda one last year.

I've never messed the the tps. How would the recalibration of the tps help?

would replace plugs/wires or clean them atleast..

make sure brakes are not hanging up (rear drums especially)
tire pressures are good. would run 38psi.

cap/rotor= more of a wear item than wires. id do them first.

If the TPS is calibrated incorrectly, it'll try dumping more (or less) fuel than you actually need, throwing off your gas mileage. If you aren't sure how to do it, there's a how-to in the FAQ's sticky.

I just want to be as thurogh as possible because this whole crappy mpg is really pissing me off and I want to get this fixed asap

I have 4 wheel disks off 96 teg. I will be doing the wheel bearings in the near future. Tire pressure is at 40psi (falken 912 52 max psi)

The other thing that seriously impacts mpg that wasn't mentioned is oxygen sensor.

If your full tune up (plugs, cap and rotor) and if needed wires doesn't improve your MPG you might have a dirty primary O2 sensor.

The TPS is set by factory with shear bolts so in their mind it's last on the list to tinker with usually. The shear bolts indicates that Honda never meant for it to be tinkered with. That being said, a great many people have had serious improvements in how the car acts by testing and adjusting the TPS. If you test the voltage and it is relatively close to spec on the closed position, it probably isn't the main reason for the serious reduction in MPG.
