pinging in a 96 DX

pinging in a 96 DX
well its a 96 with 96K. only has K&N filter. it pings if i accelerate hard around 4K to 6K RPM. it doesnt happen all the time. i run 87 octane but i read here that a DX doesnt need anything more. what can i do??
