why does vtec not work for about the first 5-10 minutes after i start my car?
tried to search for this but found nothing. anyway, i raced this kid from my work last night just for fun. i was in my del sol which has a b16a3 swapped in and he was in a '97 (i think) grand prix. to make a long story short, he beat me.... i hit every gear, just no vtec. why does vtec take a few minutes before it works? and also, how much hp was i losing because of no vtec?
thanks.
thanks.

Re: (fresh pizza guy)
Take that as a sign. At the very least, allow your engine to get to normal operating temperature before you start taking it to redline every gear.

Put that **** on a switch dawg.
But seriously, you need to let the car get warm before you go banging it into the rev-limiter. VTEC needs a certian throttle position, temperature, and oil pressure before it will work.

Sounds like the kid just started his car and took off. Good way to get some premature wear on your motor!
thanks.

I like to start my car up in the winter and just bounce it off the rev limiter at idle to warm the car up faster, helps to circulate the oil good too.

weather vtec works or not, do NOT push your engine hard until it is up to temp. that is why vtec does not work, so you don't do anything stupid. all of your engine parts are made of metal, metal expands when it gets hot. all of you parts are set to very specific tolerences, those tolerences are set up for normal operating temp, so don't destroy your motor, because we'll have to deal with your questions on how to fix it

Just get a vtec heater. Or microwave your vtec fluid before you go for a ride.

After all, you don't want to be ripping through gears when you barely started the car.

why are so many people agreeing with the oil pressure thing.....you oil pressure goes down when the motor gets warmer, your vtec isnt waiting for **** with the oil.

You're a moron. Don't post if you don't know the right answers. Yes, it looks for temp, oil pressure and throttle position. As was already said by just about everybody.
