Default Who has run a D16Z6 head witha D16Y8 block?

I need some help, I have some specific questions about this setup.

I know about the need for 9 Y8 head bolts, and 1 z6. Check. Was planning on using a d16y8 headgasket.

My bigger question is surrounding the cam timing situation.

***If I use a stock Z6 cam with stock Z6 cam gear (with the Y8 timing belt), will my cam timing be off?**

I know that a lot of people use adjustable cam gears... but I am doing a form of road racing where I am unable to use a bling aftermarket part like that. I need a definitive answer on this. All I see out there is a lot of maybes and hypothesis.

Will I be ok? Are there any other complications about this setup that people can advise me about?

TIA

I would say just use a z6 timing belt. There isnt really much difference at all between a z6 and y8, but i would still recommend using the one that is right for the head so the timing is correct. I'm not sure it will make any difference which one you use though.

My question isn't specifically about the belt. Its about the cam timing. If i line up the cam gear to TDC, and line up the bottom end to TDC, and put the belt on, will my cam timing be off from my bottom end? I know that people say there is about 5 degrees difference between the Y8 and Z6 cam gears. So in theory it seems that my cam timing will be off 5* if i just bolt everything up per the factory service manual.

HELP! someone who has run this setup.

sounds to me like you should run your y8 gear with a z6 belt.

ok. my bad on the timing belt call, both are 104 teeth. both engines have the same deck height. the only PHYSICAL difference in heads is the cam gears. they are a half tooth off of each other. the y8's water pump cog is also 1mm larger than the z6. in any case, this one has been covered on d-series.org. my question is why? y8 heads are better.

on my miny me swap i used the d16z6 timing... 16 degrees. the engine ran strong for a while and when the vtec turned on, it pulled... but the engine i have has a lot of miles, so over time, it lost power. you have to use a cam gear i think. because i don't know if the stock z6 cam gear will do..

I want to say you need the Y8 cam gear or Z6 cam. Putting the Y8 head on the Z6 block will result in the cam being 1/2 tooth off. It will run though. Don't some people advance their cams for racing? ...so this could even be a way to accomplish that without an adjustable gear.

If you're limited to only OEM parts, you can still have fun. You can raise your compression with various other pistons, probably find a little better cam from another motor, etc.

anyone who has actually done tihs?

Thanks for the help Thumper, but I'm using a Z6 head and Y8 block, per my original post.

I'm looking for definitive answers, I now have access to a Y8 cam and gear.
