What ?'s to ask when Buying a used motor?
i might be coming up on a used jdm gsr motor for a really good price, almost too good to be true. What should i look for when inspecting the motor? questions to be asked? i just dont want to get jipped here so all comments are appreciated. Thanks.

Re: (ZipTieGuy)
ask what was leak down, compression #s when motor was running. how many miles on it. and check the plugs see what they look like, does the motor leak, use a ratchet to turn the crank see if the motor still turns

Re: (fmrprojects)
as far as the leakdown results they may have for u. A motor shouldnt leak more than 10-15%. The compression test im not exactly sure what a gsr should get but most hondas are 160. Def. pull all spark plugs out. thats all u can really do besides a thorough visual inspection too

Re: (professor poon)
pray the motor is still in the car and you can start it up before buying
other then that, compression/leakdown --> look for oil coming out of strange places -- check many of the gaskets -- really, like stated above, it is pretty visual
EDIT: Definately take a ratchet to the crank and see if it cranks. If the block doesn't crank, the engine is most likely seized and all melted together inside. When that happens, the block is as good as dead

if you are still wonderig about this you might want to ask the seller to give you the results of compression tests, and cylinder leakage test. the results of these test will give you an idea of how well maintained the engine is. especially ask how many miles are on the engine but those tests will tell you the most about the state of the cylinders.

Ask them miles on the motor. Why the motor was pulled out of the car..wrecked,totalled. ask is it legit does it have papers. if the engine starts. if there is anything blown on the engine. and make sure you look at it and make a little inspection make sure everything looks right.

The compression results and leakdown results can be bullshitted. Make sure the motor is in a car and able to run so you can run those tests on it.
