What to look for when buying engines?
hey guys imma go pick up a longblock and complete i was wonderin if anyone got any pointers for me

The darker the color of the head the WORSE condition of the motor. A dark color usually means oil not changed often enough (most common), general abuse, redlining all the time.
The lighter the color of the head the better, always look under oil cap. my b18b after 50k miles and 3k mile oil changes is so clear on the head that I can see my reflection in the cams.

don't forget to make sure it's legit and not stolen. i bought a POS jdm b16 from some guy. it sucked ***. then i bought a legit b18b1 from a store. it came with a 6mo, unlimited mileage warranty. it's totally worth it for the extra piece of mind

my cousin left a b16 short block in his garage the sleeves got rust on it now. i think it would be smart to spray some wd40 on to keep it from rusting.

Well when I was at my local shop I noticed an engine that they had just received in and there was actually a sticker on it saying that they have put some sort of an "additive" if you will, inside the motor and trans to prevent it from rusting and corrosion. I don't know the name of it off the top of my head but I can call and find out if you'd like.

My uncle stored his motor (v8 vett engine.. from like 60s.. I forget) just put a thin thin lining of oil over all the internals. It was perfect inside with the exception that some mice got in through a hole lol... mirror finish with no rust on internals.

Yes, storing engines should be done with oil in the crankcase and transmission with a teaspoon of oil drizzled down the spark plug holes or - ideally - over the cylinder walls before locking it up for hibernation. WD40 works well too, and if you go that route you can spray it in every month or so (don't neglect the throttle body) to ensure a nice anti-rust layer on the componenets.
Putting an engine away dry is begging to have the cylinders rust and the oilpan dryrot through. Ideally, you would rotate it by hand with that teaspoon of oil in the cylinders every couple of weeks to make sure everything was still up to standards.
