i have a 93 honda civic dx with a 98 b18 swap, the thing is i want to change the transmission fluid in my car for im pretty sure it hasnt been done for a very long time and i have a problem with my reverse not engaging fully unless i tug on the shifter really hard and hold it in place (sometimes it "pops out" and grinds. My plan is to change the transmission fluid to this so called GM Syncromesh and get a new shift linkage and bushings for my shifter is very loose and has alot of play. i am planning on going to GM to aquire this stuff but my problem is i have no clue on anything about transmission fluid, what do i ask for when i go to GM tommorrow? is there like a certain kind of synchromesh fluid with numbers and stuff? i know it has to be for manual transmission.

a lot of honda transmission have problems getting into reverse. simplest way to fix it, go into 4th gear before going into reverse. as for transmission fluid goes i highly recommend using honda MTF for manual transmission. honda's manual tranny are very picky in my opinion. and if you do use honda MTF you dont need to change it often. i have been running mine on my civic for about 60k now and it still runs like a champ. my old integra i ran it over 100k and never had a problem. but you can change it if you want. but i recommend honda MTF.

GM Syncromesh, i never used it before but have had friends that did. it's either work or no work. some will fix their grinds over night. some has no effect. so thats a gamble for you. you can try it, if it doesn't work try the "4th before reverse" method i told you earlier.

i think my reverse is most likely a syncro problem and my linkage needs to be changed regardless of the condition of the tranny so i guess its worth a shot u know? since ppl been keep talking about that GM stuff. i always shift from first to second then to reverse but i dont htink it makes a difference in my car

The OEM honda stuff works very well.The GM syncromesh is also good stuff I used to run that in my old 240.

i use on my ex/si d15 the RedLine Synthetic Manual Transmission Lubricant (MTL), and for my sis nissan the MT-90

after doing some research i realized that one of my two oil leaks (one of them is a oil pan gasket leak i believe) might be tranny fluid for it is dark and has a tint of green when spread out, also it is dripping right next to the tie rod boot where i think the draining bolt is. Do you think that not having enough tranny fluid due to a leak might be the cause of my sketchy and mysterious tranny?

if you are just having a hard time in reverse gear only and all other gears shift in fine then i believe fixing a leak in a tranny will not fix your problem.

if you are experiencing grind in other gears as well, could be your clutch not engaging/disengaging properly. could be bad clutch, bad installion of clutch, or freeplay of clutch pedal is not adjust properly. or your brake fluid system needs to be bleed. it could be many many reason. but remember grinds in reverse is a common issue in older year hondas and changing fluid will most of the time not fix that problem.

OEM HONDA MTF...i talked to a real Honda Technician the other day. "Its basically motor oil w/ some friction modifiers but HMTF is better than 10w-30 oil."
- i got a free funnel from the guy anyway, it is THICKER than regular 10w-30 oil, so i would say OEM FTMFW.
