What did I break on my trans??? B16 trans..
I found a leak and thought maybe a bolt just didn't get torqued properly after installing LSD, gave it a little turn and ....OOPS!!! It broke!!! What is it? How do I fix? What does it do? I am learning still, unfortunetly the hard way today...thanks.

What kind of tranny is it? I know that that bolt with the spring and the ball when I did my H22 tranny, held the rods in place while in certain gears. If you take a flashlight to it, you will see two rods with I believe three grooves in them where the ball sits. When you shift, the rod moves either up or down and the ball will sit in the grooves.

B16 trans, 00 Civic Si. How do i safely get the rest of the bolt out? Could this have screwed up anything on the inside? I have not driven it of shifted since this broke.

That goes in one of the gear shift rod things... there are three of the rods inside the transmission... Can't really explain it...

Probably going to have to drill into what's left of the bolt, and possibly use and ease-out to gently remove the thing. You should be able to get that bolt alone from Honda for a small price. Should be good as new afterwards.
If you want to be ultra-sure, call a tranny shop and ask if they would mind looking at it.

So is some of the threaded portion of the bolt still in the aluminum case? A clearer pic of the hollow detent bolt will show this.
Or did the entire steel detent bolt come out and the aluminum threads in the case are stripped out instead?

go to autozone and get a screw retractors.
They sell whole kits for like 5 bucks.
With that drill though the rest of the scew, it should fall out, than buy a new screw and replce it.
edit: if you that the tranny was loose, what were you thinking when tigten this bolt.
that bolt got nothing to do with the tranny holding up.

That bolt holds the spring agains a steel ball, which sits inside the shift fork grooves so the shift forks don't move around while you're in gear. If they weren't there, the transmission could easily slip out of gear because one of the shift forks (in your case 5th and Reverse) could slip the synchro hub/rev idler gear holder out of place. If the reverse idler gear contacts the countershaft while you're in forward gears it'll eat it right up. So don't drive the car!!!
What's left inside the threads is a sleeve (image a bolt with the center drilled out) for that spring/ball to slide in. Use a screw extractor that'll pull that out and replace it. Those bolts DO NOT require much torque (which an excess of may have broken it) to tighten.

Re: What did I break on my trans??? B16 trans.. (PupaScoopa)
I have the ball (you can see it sitting in the broken bolt head), I am going to pick up a new bolt in the morning and try to use a screw extractor to get the remains of the bolt from the case. As for fixing it can i simply in this order....1) put the ball back in the hole 2) put the spring back in the hole 3)put the new bolt in the case, will that work? Or is there more to getting that ball back in the correct spot. Like i said, I haven't shifted or driven it since the piece broke.
