Weird Rattling From Motor B18C GSR
well i got the weird rattling coming from either the block, head or the oil pan, sounds like something is loose like a bolt hitting some metal or something, i cant really pin point the location, i thought it was a bent valve but i did a compression test and all cylinders are ok, 180 across with 5 cranks and around 210 across with like 6-7 cranks, but besides that, it just kinda comes and goes, its not there all the time. This just started like last week, but everything is running just as good as before the noise, i even got on it, no power lost or anything, i was thinking it was a bolt from the windage tray in the oil pan that came loose, would that even be possible? i even jacked up the car and turned the car on (with jack stands of course) and i tried to see if anything was loose under the motor, but didnt see anything, just sounds like its by the bottom somewhere. If u guys can even try to help me that would be great, im kinda sketchy about **** like this, and only reason is cause i need to this motor to be in good condition, motor is going to be boosted this week, im tearing everything down tomorrow, taking off oil pan, i guess i will see if anything is loose from there, TIA appreciate it

man i had a problem sort of like this. it ended up being my heat sheild around me xhaust ratteling against my tranny. One of the bolts had rusted and broke. I just took it to a muffler shopand they cut it off. the even did it for free , but i flowed the guy $5 for his time, it only took a few minutes to do.

im pretty sure its not a heat shield, was under the car with the car running i could heard it around like the oil pan, block, crank pulley area, and sometimes it would sound like it was coming from the head or somewhere in the back

Sounds like you might have spun a bearing. But the heatshield is a more likely suspect. How many miles on the motor, how hard do you drive it???

there are maybe like 26,000 miles on it, its a 2001 motor, i dont drive it like i stole it, just a run here or there, and maybe ill get on it once in a great while, but nothing too bad, wat are indications of a spun bearing? would there be any other symptoms? this noise just kinda comes and goes, it was actually gone for like while, and when i would rev it, its fine no noise, power is good, no power lost.

This may help you, I had a mysterious rattle once and could not find what it was until i realized i forgot to tighted the bottom nut on the alternator. it rattled like a bitch. If you did anything with your alt lately, i would check the nuts. just a thought from my experience

doesn't sound like any internal damage by the way you drive. Just check everything out around the engine, anything under your hood that has metal to metal contact is capable of that sound. If you left a socket in there that can do it...
We've all done that at some point.

i took the windage tray off and looked for anything unusual, but looked to be normal, i even looked for metal shavings in the oil pan, everything was ok there, it almost apeared to look like metal shaving but when i touched them it was nothing, so no metal shaving in the pan. should there be anything else i should look for since i will taking the oil pan back off tomorrow? i have to drill the hole for the oil return.
