vehicle speed sensor?
quick question that im not sure of, my vehicle speed sensor is shot so i have no speedo for now, but my question is will my VTEC still engage? my RPM's work but just no speedo and i figured that if the car doesnt know how fast its going it wont engage but ive had others tell me its based on the RPM's not speed but i know you have to be going at least 20MPH for it to work. anybody had this problem before? its even harder to tell because i have a boosted D16Y8 and you couldnt hear it kick on anyway.
thanks,
tony

Re: vehicle speed sensor? (99Civic-EX)
vtec will not work if the vss is dead. i had this same exact problem where my vss went out and i had no vtec, and the speedo quit working. unplug the vss plug, spray some elec cleaner on it and pull the vss out of the tranny and make sure none of the prongs are broken. when my vss went out, the middle prong on the vss was broken. so i just bought a used vss from a salvage yard and everything is working fine to this day....

For VTEC to engage there's a minimum # of requirements:
- You have to have > X amount of oil pressure
- You have to be going > Y MPH
- You can't be throwing any VTEC CELs
- Your temp has to be > Z º (I think it's around 150)
Without the VSS the ECU does not know how fast the car is going and VTEC will not engage.
I think that's all of them. I saw a chart in one of the helms manuals, but I can't find it now..
