could it be because the oil has not warmed up yet?

i have the same problem with my 2000 civic d16y8. i guess is becuz the oil is still cold and not crank up to the valves on the top when the engine is cold becuz this happens only in cold days. i can hear louder noise when i use 10w-30, but less noise as i switch to 5w-50.

yeah, i just got a valve adjustment done last week (milage: 86XXX), i can still hear the ticking when i start the car up in cold morning. and the ticking gets louder as the rpm get higher, but once the engine is warmed, the ticking is gone.

See if the valves need to be cut. They do the same thing that you get your rotors machined but its for valves. It cuts off a layer where it would seal. It gives it the perfect angle. see if the seams are matching up right. Ill talk to my boy for you. Ill ask him about it.

Same with me 00 EX D16Y8 87k on the clock with ticking. It started last winter, and has gotten a bit louder this winter. I was going to adjust the valves when I do my 90K maintenance, but I might not bother if it didn't seem to help.

Is there any reason to be concerned about this? My mom's old d15 DX started doing this around 100K, and by the time it had 150, it used to knock like a biatch until it was fully wam, and I don't want that to happen to mine.

if a cam has vavle lash its going to rattale when there cold because when the oil gets hot every thing expands and then you can't here that much. thats why when you install a cam they tell you the vavle lash either hot or cold.

Ok this problem only started about 1500 miles ago I change the oil regularly and I use mobil 5w 30 like it says so I dont think that its the oil or that it has a "hot" back lash since it just started doing this but the haynes manual says to adjust them when the car is cold so if I adjust the car when its hot wll this help out any also that car has 113000 miles on it I know thats not much for a honda but I have plans for some major mods and I just need to know if there is a remedy for this so that I dont blow my engine before I can get started.

Thanks

most valve lash is done cold. they make a tool for honda rockers if your doing it yourself it helps so you don't have to hold a wrench a screw driver and a feeler gauge all at the same time. If it is a stock cam just call a dealer ship and ask them the lash for the rockers and if its hot or cold.

I know I've seen a tool for this, it's like $80. I can't find it by asking dr. internet though. Does anyone know where I can get it online? From everything I've heard, I probably will go through with it after all.

scroll to the tool on the bottom, it is 50 bucks but Matco is top of the line. so maybe craftsman will sell the same thing for $20

and i have a 1999 Y8 head on my d15 block and it makes the exact same noise as everyone else's, i got remote start and let it sit for a couple mins before I drive it

just a thought but you might be mistaking valve tick for piston slap

If the valve clearances are to spec I would check service limits. I don't have the manual with me right now but if you need I can put together a list of service limits on the valves. Also when cold starting fuel injectors like to amplify the tick. Those things like to work harder when cold as well. Just make sure you are not beatin on it until you have reached "normal operating temp" and make sure you change the oil regularly. My EG doesn't go over 2,750 miles without a fluid change. Or your ignition timing could be slightly off. Or it could be piston slap. There are so many things a "tick" could be. I tell you what, next time you go to the doctor steal his stethascope and narrow down your possible problems by making sure its in the head where the tick is coming from. Or.... Drop the single cam and swap in a H22 or B18. Anyway, good luck.

There are automotive stethoscopes made specifically for this purpose.

I have one and love it.

My 96 y8 motor did it after I'd give it more then ½ throttle in any gear. It was time for a valve adjustment so I believe that's what it was, but it was swap time so I just left it along and pulled the motor.

I am aware of the "automotive specific" stethascope, it is just so much more fun when you have a little metal plate on it with your doctors name engraved in it. That way when your finding the rattle you can look over at your buddies and say "Scalple! Oh **** I meant 10mil." LOL

Thanks everyone for the comments, that Matco tool was the exact one that I was looking for.

I'm almost positive it's the valves. I had thought it might be piston slap, but it's coming from the top of the engine. The only thing I'm concerned about (if it's valve lash or whatever) is if it's going to get worse or cause problems if I don't adjust the valves.
