Uh oh....Help Please~ Dist. Problem0 Y0!
Well, lately, after the engine gets semi-warm, I can hear a grinding like noise coming from the distributor. It sounds as if the rotor was grinding against the cap or something. Whenever this happens, the RPM's jump or drop like lightening and then returning to 800 or so. The CEL comes on but when I shut off the car and turn it back on for diagnostic, it doesn't come back on unless that "grinding" noise comes up. I changed the rotor and it still did it. I changed the cap and it still did it. I changed the plug and it still did it although it did however, stop for a few weeks, but now it's back.
This morning, I took off the cap because it was doing it again. The noise was so annoying and the idle was like **** I couldn't stand but to try to find out what was wrong. Upon taking off the cap, I looked inside the cap, which happens to be fairly new, and it's all coverd with black ish everywhere. The thing that surprised me was there was a moisture spot inside as if water got in. Now I'm thinking oh great, wtf is this?
I don't know what can be causing this and I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or experiences they can share with me. FYI, I didn't change the wires yet. The motor is stock and is pretty old. I hope someone can help. Thanks.

Replace your distributor. That grinding noise is probably your bearing going up. I had the same problem not too long ago.
