Default transmission squeal when down shifting

I have a 1994 Civic Ex 5-speed. When I'm in 1st and shift to 2nd, at around 5,000 rpms, when you push the clutch in it makes a loud squeal like a belt squeal. When you down shift from 3rd to 2nd at around 5,000 rpms it also squeals. Also when I first crank the car and put it into reverse, it grinds going into reverse. Does any one know what might be the problem? Please help! Thanks.

grinding while going into reverse is normal. press the clutch in and shift from 1-2-R to prevent the grind.

sounds like it might be a pilot bearing, but your describtion is a bit unclear.

it could be, but the gears would grind instead of squeal.

Throw out bearing could be going out. Only way to know for sure is to remove the tranny and check out the visible bearings.
