when i shift into 3rd , it makes a grinding noise, like metal on metal, but if i shift pretty slow, it wont really do it, but i have to do it really slow. Whats the problem, and how do i fix it??

 

you have bad synchros and u need to replace them...

 

how much do the syncros cost?

 

before my car crashed, i replaced all the synchro's for 320 bux... felt like a brand new gearbox... so much so that the clutch started slipping for the first time....

synchro's aren't that pricey... but the labor may rob u...

 

yup sounds like the infamous 3rd gear grind. what kind of car do you drive? by your sn I would say a 91 civic?

 

synchors run from 80-200 depending on the tranny

had a 91civic, now i have a 89si with b16 and ys1 tranny

 

I had the same problem with my b16 tranny. Only my problem was worse, sometimes even 4th gear grinds also. When I asked around, some people told me to change the tranny oil using Honda MTF. As a last desperate move, I changed the MTF. The tranny actually got better gradually. About a week after I changed the tranny oil it doesn't grinds anymore.

i have a ys1 tranny too and my 3rd gear does that same thing

 

Must just be the ys1 and s1 trannys.

I'm going to try fully synthetic oil, and redline MTL, right now it won't grind in third under 2,200rpms. I do have a spoon drain plug w/ magnetic as well.

 

I wouldn't try Redline... I've heard too many bad things about it... try GM Syncromesh synthetic.... heard nothing but good things about it.

 

so should i get the honda mtf or gm syncromesh?

 

what do synchros look like..are they the gold/yellowish looking gears in the tranny..? doesnt look like u can order them from majestic honda..?

My tranny already is fucked, or at least the syncros. Why not give it a whirl, if I can shift without grinding 3rd at 4K rpms with Redline MTL, I'm using Redline... Ya' dig?
