toggle activated vtec
Friend of mine has a mini-me swap done. Doesn't have any money left for the proper vtec computer, or wiring. He said that he heard about someone using a toggle switch to activate vtec. Anyone know anything about this???

A 'propper' ecu can be found for like $50-100...
And I find it hard to believe he(you) doesn't have enough money for vtec wires... but enough money for a toggle and wiring ...

I have seriously seen the vtec on a button done at the track once with a swapped CRX. man, it's beyond ghetto. Can it be done, sure, but seriously, a P28 can be had for 50 bucks, a good momentary switch will run you 15 bucks plus a bag of crimps is another 5 and a couple of rolls of wire another 5. Why not just save another 25 and get the right ecu.

Re: (ek gripper)
its a cool thaught, but that's where it ends...if i'd do it, it do it to my vtec-e Z1 before i swap it, since i wont care about the damage done, but i'd use a steering wheel mouted always open button, then u press and "WAAAAAAAAH" let go, and its garbage again.
just don't do it. period.

back in 1996 when nobody had the wiring diagram for 1st Gen B16 into 88-91 Civic/CRX/Integra a lot of people use to wire it to a WOT switch on the gas pedal.. hahahah

i had my vtec on a switch when i did my first motor swap 5 years ago.. i used an ls ecu with the vtec on the horn that way it would be rich in vtec... because when the computer engages vtec it richens the fuel maps up for the extra air.... when you take that off and use a switch it leans it out because you will be running on low cam maps in vtec.. it made my car faster running in the lean maps but its not safe you can blow something up like that.. use the correct computer and do it right

Re: (siregcivic)
Yes, you can activate VTEC with a switch.
No, it is NOT a good idea.
When you activate vtec, you will only be activating the solenoid and switching to your hi-cam. Your fuel/timing maps will stay exactly the same and you will run lean and risk breaking ****. The computer switches to the hi-cam maps when vtec is engaged. This is something you cannot do with a toggle switch.
Bottom line, don't do it.
