Default Tire choices (need advice)

Well my tires are pretty bald and I'm in the market for some new ones. I have my stock si wheels on the car but plan on changing to 17s sometime in the near future so I don't want to spend a whole lot on tires right now. That said I'd still like some decent tires with good grip. If anyone has some suggestions on types or where to purchase them I would greatly appreciate it.

If you are not looking to spend money on tires, I would suggest that you do not upsize to 17" rims. The lower-end range of tires for 205/40/17 is pretty much crap. Personally, in that size, I wouldn't buy anything less than the Potenza S03.

Besides, you do realize that the "cheap" tires are about $100 each in this size, right?

You might want to consider going for a 15 or 16, so you can get your hands on the Falken Azenis (innexpensive, high quality)

If you're not all about getting 17s, keep in mind that you can now get lots of very badass tires for 15s. Not only that, all except the BFGs are under $100 per tire. I've been running Toyos on my car for a few years now and have nothing but good things to say about them. The FZ-4 and especially the T1-S are great cheap high-po tires.
Also, a set of ultra-light semi-exotic rims in 15" size cost the same as so-so 17s. Big brakes DO fit under 15s as well if you get the fastbrakes kit.
