Timing belt... How bad is this?
OK, so I took my car in (99 SI) to get the timing belt done on friday and was planning on getting it back on saturday (Or so i thought, which is why I took it in, in the first place, to minimize down time), but due to problems finding the correct water pump and timing belt for my car it took till today. I got the car back and drove it home and even got on it once and started noticing a very loud and bad sounding chattering noise, so I took it back to the mechanic and he started taking stuff off and I was standing right there so I saw him pull out what looked like a large zip tie (prolly used it too keep the cams from spinning when he took of the timing belt) and there was the oh **** face for a second as he trys to hide the zip tie and starts to put the timing cover back on and I was like what was that and he claimed that the "valve cover was just aligned wrong and thats what was causing the noise" and would not admit to that. So then the guy put the valve cover on and drops the car down forgets to bolt up the splash gaurd thing and back the car out with the splash gaurd dragging and I say WTF, that ***** not bolted up, so he bolts that up and then I drive around a bit and get back to my house to see that he forgot to put the vacuum hose that goes to the valve cover (PCV hose, I think) back on.. Talk about some straight up bullshit service for $470.
Anyway my question is, how bad is that for that zip tie to be chilling down at the bottom of the cover rustling around for a while (including being in there while I winded the car out to 8K), would that little plastic zip tie damage the new timing belt??.. (it is rubber after all)

i guess it would, i mean at those speeds that the belt was spinning, the locking square part of the cable tie can possibly leave marks which can lead anything, take it back and make the guy change it again. It could've even went between the belt and ur crank pulley

i say take the car back and have them redo the whole freaking think! i had a similar issue w/ my window regulator. take it back and make HIM do the work for what HE messed up.

I'd worry more about his apparent incompetence versus the plastic zip tie. I doubt any harm was done to your timing belt.

yeah, it could probably hurt it, but that doesn't mean it did hurt it. the best thing to do would be to pull the valve cover and upper timing cover off and look to see if the belt is damaged. also try to take your car to a honda specialist or import specialist, it's worth the extra money. and that mechanic needs to look into some other profession.

yea, just have ur belt checked by a honda mechanic for anything that would harm it, it's better than snapping it and losin ur head and gettin bent valves.

I doubt they'll redo it being that the jagbag completely denies that there was anything in there at all and that the "Valve cover was just misaligned" (which is not even possible and makes absolutely no sense). I'm pretty sure that it didn't go between the belt and crank sprocket though (hopefully) cuz the timing marks were all still where they should've been.. it most likely would've jumped timing and/or broke the belt if the zip went between the belt and pulley (atleast I would think that it would).. just wonder if it could've scored up the belt in some spots (which would be not good at all).

It could have done some damage, but I don't think it did. Remember, timing belts aren't "just rubber" those ******* are tough.

That's true, the belt that came off my car has a hard 88K on it from me and it came off looking just as good as the new belt minus the dirt on the old one.
