Default Timing belt?

My brothers 91 civic dx broke down the other day, he says he was going down the highway and it just stopped running. He tried to start it but it tried to turn over, but would not start. It would just cough and sputter but would not start. Now he was told that the timing belt probably jumped a tooth. Now is there anyway to tell if this happened? He was also told that the belt may have broke, but we havent checked on that yet.

Take the distributor cap off and tri to crank it. If the rotor doesn't turn, the belt is broken. The only way to determine if it jumped a tooth is by comparing the crank pulley TDC mark to the cam(s) mark(s).

i hope u mean turn the crank by hand and not by trying to start the car .and even so if u really want to know take off the valve cover and timing belt cover. then u will no for sure if the belt is broke. and if the belt is not broken and u want to know if it jumped a tooth then but the crank at tdc and see if the cam gear goes to tdc
