The JDM d15 is regular sohc vtec. The USDM d15xx is vtec-e out of the VX.

D15Z1 is the VX with VTEC-E. If this valve cover has the spark plugs in the front it will probably fit on a D15B or D16Z6. It's possible that it's also from an Civic HX.

JDM D15B comes equipped with VTEC.
the motor you are talking about is the USDM D15Z1. comes in VX hatchbacks equipped with VTEC-E.

your friend says he has the JDM D15B. like we said already, it is equipped with VTEC, not VTEC-E.
VTEC-E is equipped in 92-95 hatchback VX's (D15Z1) and 96-00 civic HX's (D16Y5).

He could just have a vtec-e valve cover on there for stealthiness when someone asks him to pop the hood.
