Default Temperature needle problem.

Once I turn on my car the needle goes from 'C' directly to 'H'.
Obviously it couldn't have gotten that hot in a second.
Any ideas on what it could be?

The circuit for the temperature sending unit (one wire), located near the coolant temperature sensor (2 wires) and the distributor, has an electrical short. The diagram below should help with troubleshooting:

I see. I have 2 wires that seemed to have been cut and whatever was there was stolen.
Would this happen to be near the middle-top on my bay?
When I turn key to on...cooling fan starts to work.

Would this problem cause my car to idle retardedly? (1500-1750rpm).

Thanks for the help.
I just need to figure out what is what on my engine bay.

You may be referring to the coolant temperature switch (the third coolant temperature sensor!) located on the thermostat housing. This particular switch functions to turn ON the radiator fan when the engine is hot. It sounds like a previous owner "jumper wired" the connector to this switch to make the fan run continuously.

The idle problem is probably a separate issue. You might want check the IACV or FIV for the idle problem.

What kinda motor/car do you have?

There are 3 sensors for temperature (depending on your car)

1) Fan thermoswitch- this should be located on your thermostat housing. Look at the lower radiator hose and follow it to the side of your engine block. There is a housing that the hose attaches to, there should be a brass bolt with a grey plug attached to it. This is to energize your fan when the water temp reaches the threshold

2) Temperature sender unit - this should be located on the passenger side of your head. This sensor sends the temp to your temp gauge on your cluster. This is the only plug that has a single wire. Should be yellow/green in colour

3) ECT sensor - this should be located right beside the temperature sender unit on the passenger side of your head. This sensor sends the ECU the temperature. This is the plug with 2 wires.

Again, depending on your car, one sensor may be on the back of your block... hope that helps

I have a '94 Civic EX coupe Vtec.

Which of those 3 will be behind the block?
Well if my car is one of those.

So your running a d16z6 block then? The fan thermoswitch is on your thermostat housing... follow your lower rad hose to the housing and you'll see the brass bolt and plug

The other 2 sensors (ECT and temp sender unit) are on the passenger side of the head. Your temp sender unit should be the rear most plug (towards the trunk), and the ECT should be RIGHT infront of it (towards your radiator)
