ive got a 93 del sol s with a d15b7+manual transmission at 110,000 miles i started throwing code 17 after changing my tranny fluid a few weeks ago so my speedo stopped working (Code 17 = Vehicle Speed Sensor, which is inside the tranny) anyways i dont mind driving without my speedo working but now i notice my tempature reading on my gauge cluster tends to jump up and down frantically and sometimes it will go right to the top and stay there for awhile the car drives fine and doesnt burn oil or even have a single leak on the d15, nothing coems outta my exhaust, what is causing this? is my car actually overheating how can i check, help/suggestions thank you!

how fast does the needle move? it sounds like a shhort for youi temp switch.

what tranny fluid did you use? these are mosts likly 2 different problems.

i used Honda MTF, of course, and the needle jumps around not lightning fast but sometimes it will jump around a bit then go upto hot then ill open my hood turn off my car pour some water into my coolant reservoir to put it upto MAX and it seems to be ok i really dont know if thats really changing anything but in my old toyota corolla i overheated cus my thermostat got stuck closed and my seals got all burned up and it burned oil like a bitch afterwards lol

is your car overheating?? if it is i would check your tranny fluid and your thermostat. also make sure that your fan is comming on

check my tranny fluid what for? also how do i check my thermostat without emptying all the coolant?

make sure that the tranny is full, the vss could have gone out due to lack of lube. that could also cause your car to run hotter

is your fan comming on?
does your car spew coolant out of the overflow tube?

ok how can i really tell if its full when i changed my tranny fluid it i didnt take out my vss like a lot of faqs showed. i drained it from the drain hole, then filled it thru the filler hole till it was right full i used a funnel and tube etc, it was fairly clean, and no it doesnt spew coolant out of the overflow tube othewise the reservoir would be at MAX all the time no? and ill have to drive my car a bit today to test if my fan comes on.

if it is not spewing coolant then it is nost likly not overheating it is just the gauge or wiring going bad. us an ohm meter to check the wires from the temp sensor to the gauge. do the same for the vss form the vss to the ecu

and by spewing coolant u mean int othe overflow reservoir right???

VSS issue.......one of two things happened

1) the new tranny still has the white piece inside the VSS. Inspect both.......you'll see the issue

2) VSS plug not making good contact.......typical issue. cleaning cures 99% of the VSS failures.

The temperature gauge issue.........

either you knocked off the wire or pinched it during the tranny swap, or left a ground loose.
