Sticky when going to reverse
Hiya everyone, ok, here is the deal, i have had this prob since i bought the car, just keep forgeting to ask what it may be.. alright,
When i go to shift my car into reverse, it wont go into gear, it doesnt matter how hard i pull, it wont slip into gear, so i have to shift it around a bit, then it will go in... now, this doesnt happen all the time either, just here and there, is this normal? im thinking maybe when i park the car, and put it into neutral, the gears dont match up or something?? i dunno, thats why im asking, thanks in advance

Re: Sticky when going to reverse (aphex23)
It's normal. It happens on my '97 EX, my brother's '98 GSR, and a bunch of stick Hondacuras I've driven. Nothing to worry about unless you absolutely can't get it into reverse or any gear.

Same thing happens with mine.. i took it to Honda. and they said thats how they were made, safety issues or some **** to that extent. What i do i just put it back in neutral, let of of clutch, step on it, and put it into reverse.. works like a charm.

Re: Sticky when going to reverse (Spoon)
yep, believe it or not..it is normal. Just put it in 4th, or 5th first, and then put it into reverse..dont grind if not necessary.

It's due to the fact that manufacturers like to cut corners to save money. For this reason they do not install a syncro for your reverse gear. When it doesn't go it just means the splines are not lined up. Just moving the car a bit in 1st will line them up properly and it should slide right in. I've also found that not even going in to gear either blipping the trottle and/or letting the car roll both work as well (in theory I don't think they should but they do).

this was posted not to long ago..... umm yeah its totally normal.. if you look in th owners manual it will say you have to shift the car in a foward car gear before placing it in reverse.... i just shift from first to second then over to reverse and it slides in nicely.. dont worry bout it its nothing .. (im assuning you have a manual)

the gears in your transmission are always moving; even when you're in neutral or stopped - if the engine is spinning, all of the gears in there are.
your reverse gears are spur gears, not helical like the rest. spur gears do not engage as smoothly as helical ones, and make more noise when they are moving; this is why you have that loud whirlling noise when you back up.
when you shift into reverse, the shift fork pushes a small idler gear in between the gears on the mainshaft and countershaft. think about it: 2 gears coupled together will spin in a forward direction, 3 tied together will spin in a reverse direction.
now, as i said earlier, those gears are moving. if you try to push that idler gear between 2 moving gears, it won't go easy, and you'll have that grind.
solution:
select fouth gear, then reverse; also, make sure you are at a complete still - if you're moving either forward or backward, you'll grind. this will stop forward gear movement, and will allow that idler gear to slide in like butter. if you *read your owners manual*, it explicitly states to shift into a forward gear before selecting reverse to stop forward gear movement in the transmission.
http://www.howstuffworks.com/transmission read that too.
