Default Spun rod (need engine swap

My son has a 99 EX civic 2-door 5-speed. At 100,000 miles the engine spun a rod bearing. Had the rod bearings replaced, but upon startup, another knock was present. Shortly after, the crank went.

Have been seaching for a Japan engine swap (up to 30,000 miles) but the shop told me that those engines are not available. Is that so?

Does anyone know where to purchase a complete engine. You know, the ones that Japan removes due to emission standards.

Thank You,

on the Y8? Im thinking about 125hp/90tq or so? *shrugs* With a Japanese engine you and your son may be running into some problems with smog/BAR.

That's what I'm afraid of. The engine has metal throughout. The shop said that they could rebuild, but I'm skeptical on this one.........

If you went the rebuild route you will definitely want to send the block out for a hot tank and crack testing. If the block is fine it might be better to rebuild it. Shoot, you should be able to find a D16y8 in the marketplace or even just a block and have them do that. Do you have a mechanic you use or are you looking for someone also?

I have a 'mechanic' I guess. He told me that he would replace the rod bearings for $400.00 and that the engine would be just fine. Next day, the crank went.

If you have anyone in mind, please let me know.

that sucks..yea, same thing just happened to me...except i had to swap both trans and motor (D16Y8) -- bearings on the trans went, crank blew out the bottom of my car -- and i definitely spent way too much on the motor and trans but i needed it done ASAP cause its the only car i have. but if you can afford the downtime you can find a motor and trans for dirt cheap..only expensive part will be having a mechanic swap the motor...and i dont suggest bringing back to the guy who replaced your bearings. search for VERY reputable tuning/mechanic/shop whatever or find a couple friends that definitely know how to do it.

So when you say the crank went out you mean the crank bearings are shot or the mains are screwed? I do have someone in mind that wrenches on Honda's.

thanks for your help. Like you, we don't have the luxury of time, as it is his only form of transportation. Too bad, this car ran perfect, up until the rod went. No oil has a tendency to do that..............

FLASH:
I just got a pop-up that I cannot post any more messages until a 24-hour period passes.

To answer your question, the mechanic said that the "crank" went. I don't know anything more than that right now. Please let me know who you have in mind, as this is my last post for today.........

Thanks for everyone's help!

I just posted in 2 threads that have D16y8's for sale... one is complete and one is a block located in San Diego. Depending on what you are looking to spend one of the two might be helpfull. The complete D16y8 was asking 500 with trans/harness/ecu (all stuff that can be sold for money back if not needed). I will search for more... as for a mechanic this guy I know on here name Luserkid has a lot of vouches on H-T for the past 2 years (all good comments, very helpful they say). I will keep searching on my breaks/lunch in the marketplace for you since you are a trial user

well yea, like me, your car just started burning oil and then the clanking starts..and then PRESTO! you have engine parts under your car and on the highway for showcase.

sucky experience. but if you dont have time and enough cash...either get in touch with the mechanic whos going to fix your car and see if he can locate the same motor and if you need a trans TRY to find a d16Y8 motor...it came with the best trans for a D series minus the JDM ones that have a limited slip differential (unless you are swapping for a b series)

or go on hmotorsonline.com and get their number, call them to see if they have the D16Y8 and if not (which is probably the case) just get the D15B (same single cam vtec) but get it with a limited slip trans...still pretty cheap.
