Default Engine builders I need your advice

I picked up a D16Y8 little while ago and finally got it taken apart. I knew it had a rod knock when it was taken out. After taking it apart I found 1 rod bearing snapped in half and another that looked like it had been crushed (i guess the saying "spun a rod bearing" fits best for this) Anyhow this is the first engine i have taken apart and i'm doing it just to see and learn more. My question is if it had a rod knock and the bearings are obviously shot, what else should be done before putting this engine back together??

I appreciate anyone that's willing to help another person learn. Thanks in advance for any help on this topic.

2 things. If the bearings were as damaged as you stated, then the crankshaft and that rod are garbage. By the time the crank is properly ground and serviced its way over the price of a good used one. Actually since its a d-series a whole longblock can probably be picked up at a similar price. The oil pump and the rest of the engine are contaminated with bearing material also.

Basically what i'm saying is, once that much damage has happened to the "heart" of the engine...its a throwaway.

What happens to the crank and the rod to cause it become unusable?

If the crank has any slight sign of damage such as hot spots from the spun bearing, scratches, etc. Pretty much if it doesnt look perfect, I wouldnt even use it for the rebuild. Small nicks and scratches can damage a bearing and there goes your motor Again.

When we build engines, we like to start of with a crank with good journals. You can just get another crank anyway when you rebuild this motor.
